My Boyfriend’s Mother Embarrassed Me in Front of Everyone, Unaware That I Was Dating Her Son.
The mother of my girlfriend, Poppy, put me to shame in front of everyone, not realising that I was actually dating her son.
Harry and I first met in a small offlicence on the high street near his flat, where I was working a few evenings in my spare time. At nineteen I was determined to be financially independent, to stash away a bit of cash, so I took on extra shifts. My parents were proud: I was studying and working at the same time, which meant I could afford new gear or even save for a short break abroad. Harry thought my parttime job was a solid start, even though he himself was still looking for work.
Our romance began slowly. Harry would bring me a bunch of daisies, Id treat him to a box of chocolate truffles, and on occasion wed stay late after the shop closed, chatting and making the most of the quiet while the customers were gone.
That bliss lasted roughly two weeks. Then Harrys mother publicly humiliated me, and I decided I could no longer see her son. I was mortified.
During an evening shift she walked in with Harry. She didnt notice that her son gave me a wink and we exchanged a smile. When she reached the till, the register jammed and a customer started to complain. She declared shed shopped there a million times and was stuck with me, insinuating that I was up to no good, and then called me a fraud, accusing me of trying to cheat her out of her money by not giving a receipt.
See, Harry? This is why you need to study hard, so youll never be stuck here mumbling about a jammed till again! she snapped.
It was mortifying, especially because she was my girlfriends mother, and the queue behind her was full of regulars Id seen before, the sort who would surely gossip about the incident.
Harry begged me to forgive his mother, saying shed just been having a bad day, but I couldnt. I walked away, handed in my notice, and luckily secured a job overseas. The pay was lower, but the hours were longer and I wouldnt have to deal with people like Harrys mother again.
I still believe every job has its place and that as a student you dont have many options. Its nice when people have confident parents who think their child is destined for greatness, but that doesnt mean life wont ever hand someone with a degree a retail job at the tills.
