My Ex-Wife Tried to Sue Me for Half the House, But She Didn’t Expect I’d Already Planned for Everything
My relationship with my former wife ultimately ended with us standing opposite each other in a courtroom. I wont say who was at faultboth partners share blame in the undoing of a marriage.
Yet the truth remains that my second wife found herself a lover. He was a well-to-do businessman, who had arrived in our town ages ago and later opened a cosy little teashop on the High Street. At first, she tried to hide her affair, but before long, they made no effort to keep it secret.
Eventually, she came to me and matter-of-factly declared her intention to file for divorceand to demand half of our house. She expected that Id lose my composure and become anxious, but the house had been bought solely with my hard-earned money. My former wife had no claim to it beyond having lived there for two years. Yet now, she had the nerve to make her demands.
I took it in stride. I didnt even try to persuade her out of going to court. I simply waited, knowing shed lose her case and would end up footing the court fees. Id already endured a rather bitter experience with my first wife. That case had dragged on for more than three years, simply because we couldnt reach an agreement. Each court appearance ended in a scandalous argument.
In the end, my first wife got what she wantedshe managed to claim half my assets. She had the luck of finding a skilled solicitor. I lost the flat Id inherited from my father, left with nothing.
But with my second wife, I acted with greater wisdom. Long before we married, I owned a flat of my own, one I had painstakingly refurbished myself, but it was all in my brothers namehe was the only person Id ever trust without hesitation. So, when the time came for a divorce, it turned out I had nothing for her to claim. After the lessons of my first failed marriage, no woman would ever pull the wool over my eyes again.
