My Father’s Partner Became My Second Mum: How Aunt Mary Stepped In, Saved My Childhood and Became the Heart of Our Family

My fathers partner became my second mum

My mum passed away when I was just eight. Dad started drinking heavily; sometimes we barely had anything to eat at home. I would beg for food at school, struggled with my studies, and wore shabby clotheseventually, my teachers began to notice.

Social services inspectors visited our house several times, and before long, strict conditions were set for my dadif he didnt meet them, hed lose his parental rights. Thankfully, Dad pulled himself together, gave up drinking, and our next inspections went by without issue.

Not too long after, Dad told me he wanted me to meet a woman he liked. We went to Aunt Marys house. I wasnt keen on meeting her; memories of Mum were still raw, and I didnt quite approve of Dad seeing someone else.

But once we started talking, I immediately felt the warmth and kindness in her. I became friends with her son, who was a year older than me, and we began going to athletics club together. Dad was over the moon that I liked his new partner. A month later, we moved in with Aunt Mary, and we rented out our old flat for extra income.

Dad never got the chance to marry Aunt Mary; he was tragically killed by a drunk driver. Officially, I meant nothing to her, so I was taken into care and sent to a childrens home. When I left, Aunt Mary promised me she would bring me back as soon as she could.

She kept her word, and in two months, I was living with her again. Those two months were enough for me to understand how harsh life is in a care home. I was deeply grateful to Aunt Mary for not giving up on me, for truly becoming a second mother. Shes a wonderful woman, and her son is like a real brother to me.

Now that were both adults with our own families, Mum Mary is still the closest person to me and my brother. Twice a mother-in-law, not once has she quarrelled with her new children, nor has she ever heard anyone call her mother-in-law. Both my husband and my brothers wife call her Mum Mary for her kindness and understanding. Every time she hears someone call her that, you can see genuine joy in Marys eyes.
