My Husband’s Parents Gave Us a Flat and We Moved In Happily—Completely Unaware of the Challenges That Lay Ahead
So, its been a year since our first little one was born. Honestly, it was such a big deal for the whole family that my in-laws decided to go all outthey handed over their flat to us as a massive gift. To be fair, youd think this would be the answer to our prayers, but for some reason, my heart just kept longing for those old rented places we lived in before. And truth be told, I do feel like my in-laws played a part in how things turned out.
Right after the wedding, James and I were happy enough renting a tiny flat, just the two of us. We both worked pretty hard, always made sure the rent went out on time, and hoped wed save up enough one day to maybe rent a house. Then, out of nowhere, I found out I was pregnant. We had planned on giving it a few more years, but as life would have it, fate had other ideas. When we told Jamess parents theyd soon be grandparents, they were determined to make life easy for their future grandchild.
With their usual generosity, they bought a cottage in a village and offered us their roomy two-bedroom flat in Manchester. Given their comfortable situation, they had it all redecorated and helped us update our old, worn-out stuff too. We were honestly very thankful, but we didnt get a say in how anything looked or where anything went. Still, we moved in, grateful for the help, but we had no idea how challenging things would become.
The thing is, the in-laws began popping round constantly, which slowly turned into a routine. Theyd always start moving things about to suit them. Quite often, I felt more like a visitor in my own home, completely voiceless. My mother-in-law would go rummaging through our cupboards and pantryeven if we werent in. I longed for my personal space, but even where to put a drinking glass seemed to be up for her inspection. Every so often, theyd do a big tidy up, chucking out things they figured we didnt need, and wed end up spending ages searching for them later. One day, my father-in-law accidentally binned some important documents, and it caused a huge row between him and James. They didnt speak for absolute months after that.
Now James is racking his brains, trying to figure out how we can get our independence backhes even thinking about taking their keys away.
