My Son-in-Law Had a Hidden Motive for Marrying My Daughter

Published

on

I couldn’t quite wrap my head around why my daughter, Emily, was in such a hurry to marry her boyfriend, Thomas, especially given they’d only been together for a mere month. Honestly, I half wondered if she might be expecting. What else could possibly explain such haste? Emily insisted there was no baby on the way. She claimed they were simply hopelessly in love and couldnt bear to be apart.

At the time, I decided to focus on the bright side. Most people spend their lives searching for that kind of passion. The wedding plans sprang into action immediately both families chipped in, us included, and put some pounds towards the festivities.

The ceremony itself was lively, full of laughter and happiness. Yet, amidst all the joy, I noticed Thomas mother, Margaret, looking distinctly out of sorts. At first, I assumed she must not approve of Emily. I didnt feel like prying, but I couldnt shake the feeling that there was more to it. Eventually, I made my way over and asked her gently if anything was wrong.

Margaret was quiet at first. Finally, she looked up, tears brimming in her eyes, and confided in me.

This wedding shouldnt be happening, she whispered. My son is going to make your Emily miserable. He doesnt love her, he never did. Hes marrying out of spite. His ex-girlfriend betrayed himcheated with his best mate. Thomas just wants to get even. I begged him not to do it. But you know how the young are; they think they know better.

I listened, and honestly, thought it was all a bit mad. Id asked Emily repeatedly if everything was alright between her and Thomas, and she always told me everything was fine. I brushed Margarets words aside, assuming she must simply be unhappy about the wedding.

Two months later, though, Emily turned up at our door, tear-streaked and clutching her bags. Thomas had filed for divorce. He was still hopelessly in love with his ex, claimed Emily didnt suit him at all, and admitted hed only tied the knot for revenge.

Now, I cant shake the guilt. Why didnt I step in? Deep down, I had my suspicions but chose to ignore them. The whole ordeal has reminded me that, as a father, I ought to trust my instincts and that, sometimes, wanting the best for your child means being brave enough to ask hard questions, even when theyre blinded by love.
