“My Wife’s Mum Is Loaded—We’ll Never Need to Work!” My Friend Tom Was Sure His Rich Mother-in-Law Would Provide Forever, But Life Had Other Plans

Mate, let me tell you a story about my friend, James. Hes always been the type to look for an easy ride, never wanted to work a day in his life if he could help it. His grand plan was to marry a girl from a well-off family, which, knowing James, didnt surprise me one bit. He started seeing Emilya lovely girl, kind-hearted, but from a family with money thanks to her mum, who owns a few decent-sized shops in town.

Now, I could see clear as day that James wasnt really in it for love; he just fancied the lifestyle. I remember telling him, Mate, you really think theyre just going to pamper you forever? Wouldnt it be better to have your own job, be a bit independent? He just brushed it off, grinning ear to ear, Oh, come on, weve got a baby on the way, and they trust me completely!

I just couldnt quite get my head around it. Felt a bit sorry for Emily, to be honest. Its just not right, sponging off your wifes family. Ive always thought a bloke should pull his weight, you know?

Fast forward a bit, and I got curious about how things were going for him. So I asked where he was working these days. Turns out, neither of them had a job. Theyd just couch about the house all day, playing computer games, watching telly, or nappingliving the high life, all on Emilys mums generosity. Ive got to admit, part of me was a tad envious. James got exactly what he wanted.

Hed boast, Emilys mum is loaded, matewell never need to work! He looked chuffed, as if hed cracked the secret to life.

But of course, nothing lasts forever. Her mums business hit a rough patch, profits took a nosedive, and before long, she offered both James and Emily jobs at the shop.

A month went by, and then out of the blue, James rang me up, sounding a bit desperate. Look, mate, any chance you could lend me five grand for a couple of weeks? Im looking for work, have a job interview lined uponce I get my first paycheck, Ill pay you back. Were absolutely skint.

So that was the end of his carefree days. Since then, both of them have found jobs, doing proper graft. He did pay me back, mind you. Just goes to show, this whole wealthy family will look after us forever thingwell, its a fairy tale. Youve got to stand on your own two feet; thats the only way to feel secure and truly happy.
