Never Wanted to Get Married – But Mum Made Me Do It

Published

“I didnt want to marrymum made me.”

“Tom, will you look after Jack?” called Emily toward the bedroom, adjusting her scarf in the mirror. “Ill be back by six. Dont forget to feed him lunchtheres food in the fridge, just needs heating.”

Saturday had turned out unusually hectica crisis at work meant her boss asked her to come in on her day off. No one else could handle it, so Emily agreed without hesitation. The job gave her more than just moneyit made her feel valued.

Five-year-old Jack was quietly playing with his toy cars in his room. Emily could hear him murmuring, mimicking engine sounds. A normal weekend morning. Shed already checked her bag, found her keysthen Tom walked out of the bedroom.

“No,” he said flatly.

Emily froze, her hand still on the door handle. She turned, staring at him.

“What?”
“I wont be looking after the boy,” Tom repeated, walking past her to grab his coat. “Ive got plans today.”

Emily couldnt believe what she was hearing. Six years of marriage, and nevernot oncehad he refused to watch their son. Tom had always been a good fatheror so she thought. She stood there, trying to process it, while he calmly put on his shoes and headed for the door.

“Tom, I dont understand. Whats going on?” She stepped toward him, but he sidestepped her as if she were furniture.
“Nothings going on,” Tom tossed over his shoulder before leaving without a backward glance.

The door shut in Emilys face. She stood in the hallway, clutching her bag strap. Her chest tightened. She had to be at work in an hour. One hour! She grabbed her phone, fingers shaking as she dialled her mother.

“Mum, Im so sorryI need your help. Can you come watch Jack?”

Thankfully, her mum didnt ask questions.

Emily worked out the timingher mum wouldnt make it in time. She rushed next door to Mrs. Thompson, the elderly neighbour who always helped in a pinch. She knocked, pleading.

“Mrs. Thompson, could you please watch Jack for half an hour until my mum arrives? Theres an emergency at work, and Tom Toms gone out.”

Mrs. Thompson sighed but agreed. Emily hurried back, explained to Jack hed stay with the neighbour briefly, then dashed out.

The whole way to the office, the mornings events felt unreal. What just happened? Why had Tom acted like that? Had they argued without her noticing? She replayed the last few days in her headnothing stood out. Last night, theyd had dinner, watched a film, even discussed plans for the week.

At work, she couldnt focus. Her mind kept circling back to Toms cold dismissal.

She tried texting him several times.

“Where are you?”
“Whats wrong?”
“Why did you do that?”

No replies. Her phone stayed silent. She checked it every five minutesnothing.

That evening, Emily hurried to let her mum go home.

“Thank you so much, Mum. I dont know what Id do without you.”

Her mother stroked her hair, just like when she was little.

“Its alright, love. But tell mewhat happened? Wheres Tom?”
“I dont know. He left this morning and hasnt come back.”

She saw her mum out. The flat was eerily quiet. Emily peeked into Jacks roomhe was fast asleep, hugging his teddy bear. So small, so defenceless. She brushed his hair, kissed his forehead, then slipped out.

Tom returned two hours later. Emily had showered, changed, and drunk some calming tea. Hearing the key turn, she stiffened. He walked in as casually as hed lefthanging his coat, kicking off his shoes, heading to the living room.

Emily stood in the doorway, watching him. Inside, she was boiling. Tom didnt look up from his phone. She stepped in front of him.

“What was that about?”

Tom lifted his gazecold, indifferent. The kind of look strangers give. Not a husbands. Not a fathers.

“Im tired of pretending,” he said.

Emily went still. Her pulse pounded in her temples. She slowly sank onto the armchair, never breaking eye contact.

“Pretending what?”
“This family. This marriage. You. The boy.”

She searched his face for any sign of a joke. There was none. His expression was icy, detached.

“What are you saying?” she managed, gripping the armrests.
“Exactly what I said.” Tom shrugged. “I never wanted to marry you, Emily. My mother forced me. Said you were kind, good, the right sort of wife. That men should value women like you. That Id be happy. I put up with it for six years. But I cant anymore. This marriage is suffocating me.”

Emily stared at him. Tears welled, but she refused to let them fall. Not now. Not in front of him.

“Then why wait so long? If you were miserable, why not leave sooner?”

A flicker of irritation crossed Toms face.

“For you. The boys older now. You can handle him alone. If Id left earlier, it wouldve been harder. So I waited.”

Emily laughedsharp, bitter. She looked at him like he was a stranger.

“Thanks for the grand favour,” she spat, wiping her eyes. “How noble of you.”
“You should be grateful!” Tom snapped, raising his voice. “I never cheated. I was faithful. Do you have any idea how hard that was?”
“Grateful? For what? For not cheating? I didnt drag you down the aisle, Tom! You proposed. You got on one knee. You said you loved me. Or did your mum make you do that too?”

Tom shot up from the sofa.

“She pressured me! You dont understand! She said Id regret passing up a woman like you. That Id never find better.”
“And do you regret it?” Emily stepped closer. “Regret marrying the good, kind, proper girl?”
“I regret this marriage!” Tom waved toward Jacks room. “I wanted something else. A different life. Instead, I got you, your demands, and a kid I never planned for.”
“Jack was unplanned?” Emilys voice turned to ice. “Are you saying our son is a mistake?”
“Thats not what I meant,” Tom backtracked, but Emily wasnt letting him off.
“Yes, it is. You think we ruined your life. Me and Jack. So tell mewhy did you stay? Why not leave when you found out I was pregnant? Why play the loving husband and father?”
“Because I had to!” Tom clenched his fists. “Because my mother said I couldnt abandon you with a baby. That itd shame the family. That everyone would judge me. So I stayed. But I cant take it anymore.”

Emily exhaled. Disappointment crushed her chest.

“Get out,” she said softly.
“What?”
“Leave. Take your things and go. Never come back. Jack and I dont need you.”

Tom stared at her. Hed expected tears, begging. Not this cold, firm rejection.

“Emily, lets talk”
“Get out!” she shouted, her voice raw with pain.

Tom silently packed a bagclothes, documents, his phone. Emily stood by the door, unmoving. When he walked past her into the hallway, she didnt look at him. The door slammed shut.

She went to the bedroom, buried her face in the pillow, andfinallylet the tears come. She cried until her throat was raw, until she had nothing left.

By dawn, she was drained, empty. But thensomething shifted. In the next room, Jack slept. Her son. Her little boy, whod done nothing wrong.

Emily got up, splashed cold water on her face, and stared at her reflection. Puffy eyes, pale skin. But she was alive. Shed survive.

For Jack. For herself. Shed manage.

Trust was brokenthat couldnt be fixed. But it didnt matter.

Theyd be alright. Just the two of them.
