Nothing Terrible Happened in the End! Well, It Happens to Men – Got Carried Away and Couldn’t Stop in Time

On a Saturday morning, Emily dropped her son off at her parents house. Shed arranged for Daniel to stay with them for a while.

Back at home, she pulled cardboard boxes from the balcony and began packing. She started in Daniels room, folding clothes, packing toys and books, sealing the boxes with tape, and labeling them. Soon, only the furniture remainedthings she didnt plan to take with her.

Around noon, her phone rang. Her mother-in-laws name flashed on the screen.

“Hello, Margaret.”

“Good afternoon, Emily. Jeremys told me everything. I know youre upset, but perhaps you shouldnt rush? Take some time to cool off and think. Is it really worth breaking up the family?”

“It wasnt me who broke itit was Jeremy,” Emily replied.

“Emily, Im not excusing him! But couldnt you forgive him just this once?”

“Just this once? Your sons been seeing his coworker for six months, lying to me all that time. And you say forgive him? No.”

“Please, think again. Youre taking Daniels father away from him. Jeremy adores his son!”

“Margaret, Jeremy can still see Daniel. I wont stop that. But I wont stay married to him. Lets end this conversationI have packing to do.”

An hour later, Margaret arrived unannounced, convinced she could persuade Emily to reconsider.

“Really, nothing terribles happened!” Margaret insisted. “Men stray sometimesthey get carried away. Be wiser than this. Would you really let some girl steal your husband? Shell think shes won! Fight for your family!”

“Jeremy isnt a trophy to fight over,” Emily said flatly. “Should I challenge her to a duel? Or a boxing match? Whats she got to do with it? If it wasnt her, itd be someone else.”

Margaret sighed. “Ill tell you a secretJeremys father wasnt perfect in his youth either. But I was wiser. I stayed, worked through it, and now weve been married thirty-five years.”

“And your wisdom was what? Turning a blind eye?”

“I didnt make scenes. I was kinder, cooked his favorite meals, took interest in his life. I even changed my hair, lost weight, greeted him with a smile after work. Sometimes I knew exactly where hed been, and all I wanted was to smack him with a frying pan. But I smiled instead. And I kept my husband. My son grew up with his father, and now my grandson has a grandfather.”

Emily shook her head. “Youre an extraordinary woman, Margaret. I couldnt do that. My self-respect wont let me. What youre suggesting feels like eating from a rubbish bin.”

Margaret stormed out without another word.

The next day, Emilys father helped her load the last boxes into a van. On the way, she stopped by Margarets to return the house keys.

Later, she told her friend, Charlotte, about the conversation.

“She spent an hour begging me to forgive Jeremys little mistakes and not file for divorce.”

“What did she say?”

“The usualyoure taking his father away, all men cheat, women must be wiser. Then she shared how she won her husband back.”

Charlotte grimaced. “And how was that?”

“I wont repeat it. Trust me, its madness. You wouldnt do it either.”

“Have you filed already?”

“Yes, last Friday.”

“Good. That Casanova doesnt deserve you.”

Emily paused. “Waityou knew about this?”

“Not for certain, but I suspected,” Charlotte admitted.

“Why didnt you tell me?”

“Would you have believed me without proof? Remember what happened to Sarah? She told a friend her husband was cheating, showed photosand got blamed for trying to ruin their marriage. She ended up quitting her job. I didnt want that.”

Emily sighed. “At least a hint wouldve helped.”

“Maybe. But I wasnt sure. Besides, youre better off now. Where will you and Daniel live?”

“With my parents for now. But next week, well move into Grans old flatjust two rooms, but enough for us. Ill sort out Daniels nursery transfer too. Then divorce, child supportdone.”

“And Jeremy? Is he agreeing?”

“He says he doesnt want it, swears hes changed. But once was enough for me. He begged me not to file for support, promised to pay voluntarily.”

“And?”

“I refused. No loose ends. Then he threatened to take Daniel, claiming his flat and salary were better.”

Emily laughed coldly. “I counted how many business trips he took last yeareight. If he tries for custody, Ill ask wholl care for Daniel while hes away. Besides, Ive got a job and a home now. He wont win.”

Jeremy did file for custody, insisting Emily couldnt provide for Daniel properly. Margaret even claimed Emily was “hiding” the boy. But the court saw through itJeremys frequent travel made him an unreliable guardian.

Emily found a new job soon after, cutting ties completely.

Months later, Charlotte brought news: “That coworker quit. Left for London.”

Emily shrugged. “Not my problem anymore.”

And she meant it. Some wells are too poisoned to drink from twice.

Sometimes walking away isnt defeatits reclaiming your life.
