On her way to the shop, Emily suddenly recognised the mother of her first true love in the elderly woman walking toward her. To her surprise, the woman knew her too and could not hold back her tears.

For the first time in ten years, Emily found herself driving down the street where she had grown up, in a small village nestled in the Cotswolds. Though she now travelled in an expensive car, she felt anything but safe returningmemories of an uneasy childhood rushed back. Long ago, she had vowed never to set foot here again, yet something tugged her back to the place where she was born and raised.

Emily had been raised by her mother, Margaret, after her father passed away before she turned three. She knew him only from photographs. The two lived modestlyMargaret worked as a vet in the area, though she had little time for a proper garden and never earned much.

“Dont fret, my love,” Margaret often said. “So long as youre happy and healthy, everything else will sort itself out.”

Emily grew into a striking young woman, much sought afterthough without much of a dowry to speak of. At the village fête, she met a boy named Oliver from a nearby market town. For Emily, it was love at first sight, but her mother worried. Oliver came from money, and Margaret feared he might cast her aside once the infatuation faded. Emily reassured hershe believed Oliver was sincere, that wealth meant nothing to him. After six months of walks and stolen meetings, he arrived with his parents to ask for her hand. But the moment his mother saw their humble cottage, her face paled. She said nothing, yet unease settled in Emilys heart.

The wedding was set for the first Saturday in October. That morning, Emily felt strangely uneasy, though she didnt know why. Her friends helped pin up her hair and adjust her wedding gownbut Oliver never came. Her godfather (a close family friend) drove to see what had happened, but Emily already knewthere would be no wedding.

“Whatever you say, I wont let my son ruin his life,” Olivers mother told the godfather.

Emily wept until dawn. And Oliver, under his parents pressure, abandoned her without a word. Her great love snuffed out like a candle flame.

The next day, Emily packed her old suitcase and took the first coach to London. There, she found workfirst as a waitress, later as a kitchen assistant. When a chance arose to work abroad and earn better wages, she barely hesitated. While she was away, word reached her from relatives back homeMargaret had passed. But there was no turning back; Emily was already on the plane.

Years slipped by. She worked hard, first for meagre wages, then better ones, saving what she could. Yet the wound of her first love never truly healedshe had never married, still carrying resentment for Oliver and his parents.

When Emily returned to her village after all this time, people didnt recognise her at first. The once-shy, sweet girl had become a poised, elegant woman, smartly dressed but with the same warm smile. Only her eyes held sadnesseven when she laughed.

Then one day, on her way to the village shop, Emily frozerealising the old woman walking toward her was none other than Olivers mother. The woman looked up, recognised her, and burst into tears.

“Emily is it really you? Please forgive me, child. I ruined your lifeand my sons. I only wanted the better match for him, and I broke him instead. Since he lost you, hes never loved again. He drowned his sorrows in drink. Thats my doing, and now I must live with it.”

Emily pitied the woman before herfrail, worn down. In that moment, the bitterness shed carried for years dissolved. She saw the ones who had broken her heart had paid dearlythey had lost their own happiness, too.
