One Day, I Spotted My Cheerful Sister in a Shop, Walking Hand in Hand with a Distinguished Gentleman—Both Wearing Wedding Rings
One day, I spotted my usually cheerful sister in the local shop, walking hand-in-hand with a distinguished-looking gentleman, both of them wearing wedding rings.
Laura had a twin sister named Charlotte. From the moment they were born, they were inseparable best friends. They played the same games, shared their little secrets, and got into trouble together. If one of them needed defending, the other swept right in. Their parents always dressed them in matching outfits, and even after they grew up and could choose their own clothes, they often ended up dressed alikeproud of their twin bond.
They grew up in a modest home with their parents, never having much spare cash. So when Laura managed to go off to university, Charlotte wanted to follow in her footsteps, but just couldn’t swing it. Both she and their parents were disappointed, but her folks kept scraping together enough to pay Lauras tuition so at least one daughter could get a good education. Charlotte felt terribly embarrassed about their tight financesshe hated being the reason money was such a problem, always feeling that red-faced shame, no matter how hard she tried.
Then, one evening over supper, their grandmahaving had a bit too much sherryloosened her tongue and let slip a family secret. Turns out, when their parents had the twins, they seriously considered putting the younger one up for adoption, scared they couldn’t handle bringing up both. And Charlotte was the younger.
Charlotte was horrified and angry at the unfairness of it all. No matter how her family tried to smooth things over, she couldn’t let it go. She convinced herself her parents had always loved Laura more, and to get back at them, she pulled her papers from uni and left.
After that, Charlotte started blaming Laura for everything. In her absence, she figured, nobody would’ve ever thought to ship Charlotte offshe would’ve been the star, the darling, the only one. From then on, things in their family flipped upside down. The twins started living completely separate lives.
Laura eventually married a lovely man and had a son, but the sisters never saw each other. The only time they crossed paths was once at their parents’ house, when Charlotte was anything but friendlysnapping, being rude, and even criticising Lauras looks.
Then, by sheer chance, Laura ran into Charlotte at the shopping centre. Charlotte looked absolutely glamorous, arm-in-arm with a well-to-do older man who clearly had a lot of influence. Laura assumed he must be Charlottes husband.
Laura rushed over and hugged her, but Charlotte just stepped away, staring blankly as if she had no idea who Laura was. Laura felt completely thrown, standing there while her sister strode out to a flashy new car and drove off.
The next time they had to be under the same roof, back at their parents place, Charlotte launched straight into her, saying Laura looked a mess, not nearly up to scratchembarrassing even.
There was a bit of truth in it. Laura had curly hair, preferred not to bother with make-up, and dressed for comfort rather than style. Meanwhile, Charlotte was always immaculately done-up: smooth hair, flawless make-up, contact lenses instead of specs, and could treat herself to all sorts of beauty treatments.
Still, Laura was stungreally angry. She wasnt any less than her sister. She had a family, a husband, a child of her own. So she vented everything she’d bottled up to their mum, baffled at how her own twin could turn so cold. Where had all that resentment come from?
All their mum could do was gently ask Laura not to hold a grudge against Charlotte. She begged her to let it go, let her sister be happy in her own way, and to promise never to interfere or make things difficult for her.
So now, Laura can only visit her parents if she calls ahead or is specifically invited, just to make sure she doesn’t bump into Charlotte. And, would you believe it, after just one careless sentence from their grandma, everything changedfor all of them.
