You know, Jack and Emily always seemed to get along well, but there was this financial imbalance between them that kept bubbling up. Jack was always splashing out on himself, buying new trainers and booking appointments at the barbers, while Emily made do by being thriftyshe even cut her own hair at home. She contributed a lot to their household budget, but Jack didnt really seem to notice or value her efforts.

One day, Emily asked Jack to give her a lift to her mums so she could drop off a new telly. While he was waiting outside the loo, Jack overheard Emily chatting with her mum, and he realised Emily had bought a flat right in the city centrewithout ever telling him. He was furious and demanded some answers.

Emily insisted shed borrowed the money from her cousin, but Jack wasnt convinced. He went to confront her cousin, who just laughed it off and said Jack should ask Emily about anything he was worried about. Jack pressed Emily again, and she changed her story, saying she got the money from her sister. At this point, Jack was totally gutted and felt betrayed. He gave her an ultimatum: either pay him back half the value of the flat, or theyd have to go their separate ways.

Emily agreed to the split and they divorced. Now shes living with her mum in a shiny new two-bedroom flat she bought herself. Honestly, the whole thing just shows how a lack of trust and communication can ruin a relationshipits sad, really, but thats how it ended for them.

I live just a street away from a high school, and lately the familiar sounds have returned—boys with oversized backpacks and unbuttoned shirts, laughter, busy mums, bikes dropping off students at the corner. For many, it’s just everyday life. For me, it feels like a blow to the chest. Three years ago, my son, who was in Year 10, passed away, and ever since, this season has been the hardest for me.

Living just around the corner from a secondary school, I’ve noticed the familiar bustle return to the street once again...
