The elderly lady turned to Robert and uttered words that sent chills down his spine: “Today is going to be a lovely, sunny day. We’ll have plenty of time to do something together.”

So, Rob was taking the train on a quiet Wednesday afternoonthe carriage was pretty empty, so he was glad for the peace. An elderly lady got on and sat right beside him, clearly on her way to tend her vegetable patch out in the countryside. That was exactly what Rob was doing, along with a few others in the carriage. When he settled into his seat, memories of his late wife flooded his mind. They used to make the trip together, working that little bit of land side by side. After she had fallen ill and passed, Rob had avoided the place for ages, letting loneliness and nostalgia chase him away from their shared routine.

As the train pulled into the station, the old lady turned to Rob and said something that made him shivera gentle, reassuring voice: Todays going to be lovely and sunny. Well have plenty of time to get things done. She sounded just like his wife; those were the exact words she used to say before their gardening days. Rob, taken aback, just nodded and soon they started chatting. They talked about how poor the harvest had been this year, the tough winter theyd all come through, and their hopes for the next growing season.

When they reached the bus stop together, Rob realized hed never met this woman before, but here they were walking side by side. They parted ways after a bit, and Rob carried on to his plot. He found the place overrun with weeds from all the time hed stayed away, but somehow, the conversation on the train had lifted his spirits. He felt drawn to have a wander, take stock, and see what could be done.

With a newfound sense of energy, Rob rolled up his sleeves and got to workdigging up flower beds and pulling up stubborn weeds. There was a real satisfaction watching the earth come back to life under his hands, and Rob decided, for now, he wasnt going to sell this patch of land. He treated himself to a little break, sitting on a bench, munching on ham sandwiches and sipping strong tea from a flask. The sight of his favorite flowers swaying gently and ripe apples under the new apple tree brought happy memories back.

By the end of the day, Rob was feeling much brighter and resolved to make these visits more regular. When he went mushroom picking in the woods, he felt like a weight had been liftedthe fresh air and purposeful work were doing him good. He knew now that keeping the land and working it filled his days with joy and meaning.

On the way home, he bumped into the same lady from earlier. They shared apples and laughed about the hard graft they were both doing at their allotments. She encouraged him, saying he still had plenty of life ahead and reminding him that tending his patch could be a real source of happiness and purpose. As he got off at his stop, Rob smiled up at the setting sun, feeling content and no longer held back by sadness.
