Thomas Was Extremely Anxious About the Birth of His Child—His Worry Turned to Joy When the Midwife Told Him His Son Had Arrived, but That Joy Was Quickly Interrupted When She Informed Him the Doctor Was Waiting for Him in His Office
As he hurries home through the evening drizzle in London, Thomas thinks back to the morning when his wife told him she was expecting. Wanting to make it memorable for her, he puts together a special dinner, complete with fruit salads bursting with vitamins. After three years of hoping and trying for a baby, this day has finally come, and his happiness is too big for words.
Before his wife arrives home, Thomas pops into a jewellers on the high street and chooses a pair of elegant earrings, imagining the smile theyll bring her. But when he gets in, he finds his wifeEmilylooking pale and downcast, hurrying off to bed as soon as she steps inside. Troubled, Thomas offers to get a doctor, but Emily assures him shes fine and asks for some space.
Their conversation that evening is quiet and gentle, with the celebratory meal sitting untouched on the dining table. The days roll on, and at last, the long-awaited moment arrivesEmily goes into labour. The nurse tells them the joyful news: they have a son.
Following the midwife down a hospital corridor, Thomas receives an unexpected blow. The doctor explains that while their baby boy, Mark, is stable, he has a condition affecting his legs, which may prevent him from ever walking. Then, to Thomass shock, Emily decides to give up the child.
Stunned and desperate to change her mind, Thomas pleads with Emily to reconsider, but she remains adamant, despite her own mothers appeals. In the end, Thomas accepts that he will take care of their son himself. He packs Emilys things, secures their flat, and buys a cot and a pram for Mark.
With unwavering devotion, Thomas begins researching his sons medical condition, determined to meet any challenge ahead. He learns of a woman in their village just outside Oxford known for helping children with similar needs, so he reaches out to her. Expecting an older woman, Thomas is surprised when a young, kind-hearted lady named Alice greets him and offers her helpon the condition that Thomas and Mark stay with her.
Half a year passes, and little Mark is already crawling around her cosy cottage. During this time, Thomas grows especially close to Alice, and a deep bond flourishes between them. Although they are of different ages, Thomas shares his heart honestly, telling Alice how he feels. She feels the same and agrees to marry him. Now, Mark has a caring mother figure, and Thomas has found a devoted wife.
Two years later, Thomas, his new wife, and Mark are back at St Marys Hospital, this time celebrating the arrival of their second child. By chance, they cross paths with Emily in the corridor. She instantly recognises her firstborn in Mark, running and playing close by, and she watches him with genuine admiration.
