Those We Hold Closest to Our Hearts Can Suddenly Reveal Their True Nature for All Sorts of Reasons – and That’s Exactly What Happened to Me: In an Instant, They Became Strangers.

Recently, I bought myself a flat in London and I couldnt wait to share the good news with my familymy parents and my sister, Emily. Still, their reaction caught me completely off guard. Flats in the city can be quite pricey, and it took me several years to save up enough for it. Having grown tired of constantly moving from one place to another and dealing with unpredictable landlords, I decided it was time to take matters into my own hands and took out a mortgage to finally have a place I could call my own. Even though I already had enough saved for the deposit and could easily manage the monthly repayments, it meant I wouldnt be able to support my family as generously as I had before.

For nearly five years, I covered all of Emilys university fees in full and sent her spending money whenever she needed it, no questions asked. I did this out of love and a belief that families stick together and help each other out. When I invited my parents and Emily around to see my new home, they barely batted an eyelid, thinking it was just another rental place. But when I let them know that the flat was actually bought and in my name, I was genuinely surprised by how little joy or congratulations they showed.

When I explained that, because of my mortgage, Id have to cut back on the financial help Id been giving, their reaction was nothing short of explosive. They were angry and blew the whole thing out of proportion, accusing me of being selfish and saying that Id completely ruined their plans. My mum expressed her disappointment, complaining that now theyd have to start using the money theyd set aside for Emilys education. Meanwhile, Emily demanded that I keep my promise to buy her a new mobile phone, completely ignoring my changed circumstances. At that point, I couldnt help but remember that they only ever seemed to get in touch or come round when they wanted something from mealways after money, never really caring how I was or what I needed.

As I sat there stunned, I didnt feel resigned so much as confused. I couldnt help but wonder when Id stopped being seen as a beloved family member and had become more of a financial provider. Was it always this way? The thought left me with mixed feelings as I considered what our relationship had really become.

What Ive realised from all this is that sometimes, the ones you do the most for take you for granted, forgetting youre a person with needs and dreams of your own. Its a hard lesson but one thats taught me the importance of setting boundaries, even with family.
