Three years ago, I divorced my husband. We had nothing in common anymore, apart from our son. It didnt even surprise me when, just a month after our divorce, my ex-husband found himself a new, younger girlfriend. Three months ago, they got married.
Honestly, Im really not bothered by any of that now. But yesterday, I received a message from her that left me completely at a loss. She said that we should leave David alone and stop asking him for money, because from now on, we wont be getting anything.
My son is five years old. I was on maternity leave for a while, so it was David who covered all our expenses. Now I work part-time.
Right after the divorce, wed arranged to sell our three-bedroom flat and get two separate places: one for my ex, and one for myself and our son.
David pays a fairly good amount in child maintenance. Still, I want to be able to cover my own expenses, so I keep going to job interviews and searching for a full-time job. The money David sends every month all goes towards our son nursery fees, extra activities, toys, food. I use a bit for utilities.
My sons keen to start judo classes, which is another expense we have to find.
This summer, David sent extra money on the condition that I took our son on holiday. So we went to the Lake District. My son was over the moon with excitement.
Im glad that, despite the divorce, David still doesnt forget about his child. Even when I had emergencies, Id often leave our son with him. My ex would take him shopping or for a walk, sometimes to watch a film at the cinema. Yet my son has never been to his fathers house.
Id always assumed the reason was Davids new wife. And honestly, it never really bothered me until I got that message from her.
Recently, she even felt bold enough to call me. She accused me of being heartless, because, according to her, David spends most of his wages on us. I didnt stay quiet. I told David immediately. He was really angry. Apparently, he told her not to interfere in his business, let alone try to control his finances.
Even so, I worry that shell be able to persuade David to reduce the money he spends on his son. Then Id have to deny my child many things.
I just hope that David still has the decency, honesty, and kindness that once made me fall in love with him.
