Олена мовчки мила посуд. Її руки машинально ковзали по тарілках, але всередині все стискалося у тугій вузол. Вона знала: зараз почнеться лекція про те, як вона все робить не так.
– А вже про твою роботу я взагалі мовчу. Хто після філфаку стає бухгалтером? Ганьба. Ти ж могла викладачкою бути. Як Тетянка, дочка моєї подруги. А ти…
Олена не відповіла. Вона давно навчилася мовчати. Мовчання було її єдиним щитом. Коли вона намагалася заперечити – все перетворювалося на бурю. Мати вміла бити словами.

Родина мешкала у старенькій “трішці” на околиці міста: Олена, її чоловік Тарас, шестирічна донька Софійка та мати – Ганна Іванівна. Після смерті батька Олена наполягла, щоб мати переїхала до них. Спочатку здавалося, що це гарна ідея: бабуся поруч, зможе піклуватися про Софійку, Олена – спокійно працювати.
Але дуже скоро Ганна Іванівна зайняла весь простір. Вона розпоряджалася в домі, коментувала кожен крок, і в її очах навіть чай Олена заварювала “неправильно”.
Тарас терпів. ІнОлена подивилася у вікно, де вечірнє небо зливалося з золотими ліхтарями, і зрозуміла – тепер вона вільна, як вітер у степу.
