We’ve Decided That Only We Get to Spoil Her Kids

Published

on

My sister-in-law decided that we were the ones obligated to spoil her childrenand only us.

I married Daniel nearly eight years ago. A kind man, always ready to help, with an open heart. But he had one problemhis sister, Margaret. A woman with boundless imagination and an uncanny ability to twist any innocent remark into a veiled request for an expensive gift.

She never spoke directly. Her words always sounded like harmless musings:
*The kids have been dreaming of seeing that new animated film, but the tickets are so pricey these days,* shed say with a sigh. And Daniel, the moment he heard, would buy the tickets, take the nephews to the cinema, and treat them to popcorn and drinks.

*Lovely weather,* Margaret would continue, *but youre just staying indoors. Why not take them to the fair?* And guess who ended up going with her kids? Us, of course. All on our dime.

I dont do subtlety. Never have. I prefer honesty. If you need somethingjust ask. Say it plainly. Dont dance around pretending you dont want anything.

But Daniel always jumped at her *suggestions.* He adored his nephews madly. But the way he spoiled them crossed every line. Bikes, gadgets, outingsit all became routine. A single glance from Margaret, and my husband would scramble.

Recently, it was little Olivers birthdayMargarets son. Wed already given him a top-of-the-range bicycle, which cost us a pretty penny. I thought it was more than enough. But to Margaret, the bike was *hardly anything.* In her eyes, the boy *had* to go abroadto Europe, naturally. And not alone, of coursewith her. A young lad couldnt possibly travel by himself!

In Margarets language, it came out like this:
*Olivers been dreaming of Paris. His eyes light up whenever its mentioned*

Daniel showed up that day not with tickets, but with a cake and a decorative cushion embroidered with Olivers initials. I was at work, so my husband went alone. And, as youd expect, it was a slap in the face for his sister.

But Margaret didnt give up. Her demands only grew each year. My husband, it seemed, didnt mind. We didnt have children of our own, so he poured all his fatherly energy into his nephews. Maybe because he had nowhere else to direct it.

Thenthe news wed been waiting for: I was pregnant. When I told Daniel, he cried with joy, kissed my belly, and couldnt believe it. Hed dreamed of this for years. But then Margaret came along

And againwith a request. This time, a spring holiday in Prague. With *her* kids, of course. For the first time, my husband refused. He said he was about to be a father, and all his resources now belonged to *his* family. Thats when his sister lost it.

The next day, she called me. Screamed. Accused.
*How dare you?! Youve done all this just to take away the only man who ever cared for my children!*

I hung up without a word.

Then came another act. The nephews waited for Daniel outside his office. They handed him handmade cards.
*Uncle, please dont abandon us*
*Why do you need your own kids when you already have us?*

It was obvious someone had helped them write those words. And that *someone* was predictable.

Daniel came home, sat on the sofa, stared at the cards and something inside him cracked.

*Ive been a fool,* he said. *How many years have I put up with this? The boilers broken, no money for winter coats, Dad leftUncle, help us. Shes always used the kids to manipulate me. And I fell for it. Like an idiot.*

Then, suddenly, he pulled out a notebook. Started listing everything he could remember: bikes, phones, summer camps, holidays, gear, coats, theatre tickets. The totala staggering sum.

And thenthe finale. The Margaret Special.

She came to our house. Stood in the hallway like she owned the place and said:
*Now that youre having your own child, maybe you could do one last good deed? Give us the car. Not for meIm not greedy. Just so I can take the kids*

Daniel handed her the notebook without a word.
*Thats the total. For everything youve taken. Pay it back. Youve got six months. After thatcourt.*

She stormed out, slamming the door so hard the coat rack toppled over.

After that, the messages flooded in. Margarets friends bombarded me on social media. They wrote that Id destroyed the sacred bond between uncle and nephews. That now the children were *abandoned, starving, and their mothers in despair.*

But I didnt budge.

Margaret owns two flats. One from her ex-husband, the othergifted by Daniel, who gave up his own inheritance for her. She gets child support; shes not living in poverty. Shes just grown used to having everything handed to her. And nowits over.

Were having a baby. And now, my husband has a real family. No manipulation, no drama, no theatre. And you know what? I think this is just the beginning
