“What do you mean you don’t want to change your name?” my mother-in-law shouted at the registration office
Emma had never wanted to get married. But at nineteen, she found herself pregnant by a classmate shed been seeing for three years. Her choices were limitedshe couldn’t bear the thought of her child growing up without a father.
Mark was a bit older than Emma, but still immature, always seeming like the boy who never left his mothers side. Despite all that, he didnt shy away from responsibilityhe said hed marry her and raise their child together. And so, they began preparations for their wedding.
Emma would have been happiest with a simple ceremony, but her family insisted on a big, lavish event. She couldnt understand why thousands of pounds should be spent on guests, when the money could instead provide everything her baby needed. Yet nobody listenedher mother-in-law and her own sister decided everything for her: the venue, the invitations, the wedding dress.
When she was sent for a dress fitting, Emma didnt want to go. She imagined the gown in her mindfrilled to excess, adorned with gaudy gems. Her sister and Marks mother were hardly known for good taste. Hearing Emmas refusal, her relatives called her ungrateful and were furious. But Emma had other worries: finishing her A-levels, preparing for her final exams, and getting ready for her baby’s arrival.
She turned up at the registry office in a plain white dress, simple but elegant, fitting her perfectly. And thats when the drama erupted.
Nobody in Marks family knew shed decided to keep her surname. Mark himself was aware, and didnt object. His mother, however, was lividshe loudly demanded to know why Emma wouldnt take her son’s name, shouting at the wedding photographer in front of everyone.
Emma smiled and stepped away. Tomorrow, there would be a second celebration in Marks home village, surrounded by all his relatives. She knew she needed to save her energy. The marriage lasted only a few years. Mark proved to be a disappointing husband and father, spending every weekend glued to his computer, ignoring his family. When Emmas patience finally ran out, she packed her bags and left.
Her mother-in-law was furious about this turn of events. But Emma breathed deeply, finally feeling free and genuinely happy for the first time.
