When Maria’s Mother Departed This World, She Made a Confession: “Come Closer to Me, My Daughter… Your Father…”
Eleanor grew up in a small village nestled several dozen miles from the grand city. To reach the city in the summertime, she would board a little boat to cross the swift-flowing river, while in winter, she had to brave a snow-covered country road.
Yet despite the challenges, that village was home to many people. Everyone knew each other, chatted often, shared their worries, and offered help as best they could.
Eleanor was the long-wished-for daughter in her family, though her mother had given birth to her outside of wedlock.
Her father was Charlesa tall, handsome man and the husband of her mothers dearest friend. Not a soul suspected who Eleanors real father was. Charles had already raised three children, never once considering leaving his family. Eleanors mother, too, hadnt the heart to break her friends home.
From birth, Grace (Charless daughter) and Eleanor became inseparable, playing together through childhood and even attending the same school class. Both girls possessed a keen ear for music, and together they went to lessons at the village music school. They graduated with honours, dreaming of attending a distinguished music college in the city.
But once school ended, the stepsistersunaware that they shared a fatherparted ways; Grace left for the city, while Eleanor remained in the village. Their contact slowly faded, and for many years they did not speak.
Of course, childish dreams are often just dreams; neither managed to study music further. Grace trained as a food scientist, while Eleanor became a local hairdresser. Years passedEleanor married, gave birth to two sons, and only occasionally remembered how, in youth, she had been close to Grace.
It was a difficult time when Eleanors mother was diagnosed with a tumour. Eleanor did everything she could for her mothers sake. But secrets cannot stay hidden forever. As her mother prepared to depart this life, she made a confession:
Your father… your father… Lean closer, my dear…
What Eleanor learned left her reeling; she had spent her whole life beside her own sister, having never known the truth. Their similar wishes made senseperhaps their fathers genes tied them together.
Eleanor worked tirelessly to find her sisters phone number. Charles had long since left the villageGrace had moved her parents to the city, and they had vanished from local memory. Yet through the help of old acquaintances, Eleanor finally secured Graces contact.
She dialled, and instantly heard joyful surprise on the line. Grace was delighted that her childhood friend had called. Eleanor decided such big news must be shared in person, not over the phone, and suggested they meet.
A few days later, Grace returned to her native village, and the two women shared a long and heartfelt conversation.
They reminisced about childhood and school days, joyful to see each other after years apart. Now, they support one another, travel to and fro for visits, andof courseEleanor grew close to her father at last.
Charles apologised to his wife, and she forgave him. Now, he and Grace visit Eleanor together, make pilgrimage to the resting place of Eleanors mother, and Charles spends time with his grandsons, who are thrilled to have a grandfather in their lives.
Such was their fate; the truth finally came to light after many years, gently, without causing harm to anyone.
