When My Mother Discovered I Was Married, Had a Good Job, and Owned My Own Apartment, She Quickly Came to Ask Me for Financial Support
My mum was always pretty strict with me. Dad travelled all the time for work, so it was just me and mum most of the time. Dad cared about me, but every time he came back home, he’d turn up with armfuls of gifts. Mum, though, wasnt big on showing affection. One day, Dad went away on another business trip, and he never came back.
At school, I never really had any friends. I looked like a bit of a scruff, always wearing this old uniform mum found somewhere honestly, it looked like it belonged to someone else ages ago. Mum used to say, Wear what youve got, love. Ive got to sort my own life out and theres no spare money for you. So, I just put up with that ugly uniform all through Year Five.
Later on, our neighbour gave me her daughters old school uniform after she finished school. I wore it right up until graduation. As for shoes, I just wore whatever I could find; they lasted a few years before they got too tight. Eventually, I finished secondary school with good grades and decided to go to university; I picked economics as my major. On campus, I kept wearing hand-me-downs from my mates whenever they got bored of their clothes.
One day, I met Dominic, whod left uni a few years before me. We started seeing each other, and he eventually introduced me to his parents. When I visited their house, I was mortified my shoes were battered and falling apart, and my feet were soaked. His mum pretended not to notice. The next day, she invited me over again and surprised me with a brand-new pair of shoes.
I was worried Dominics parents wouldnt take to me, but soon they started treating me just like family. I honestly dont know what I did to deserve that kindness. As a wedding present, they gave us a house, and after I graduated, my mother-in-law offered me a job at her firm. It paid really well, and I was finally able to buy whatever I needed. Ill never stop thanking God for helping me make it through everything.
When mum found out I was married, had a good job, and my own flat, she rushed round asking for financial help. But my stepmother overheard our conversation. She called Dominic and our son straight home. In the end, Dominic explained to my mum that she shouldnt expect anything from me anymore. He said he was grateful to have a daughter, but she shouldnt come back to our house ever again. Since then, mums not contacted me, and now Im looking forward to the arrival of my child.
