Father Noticed a Bruise Under His Daughter’s Eye and Made a Call—His Son-in-Law’s Life Was Ruined.

Published

on

The father spotted a bruise under his daughters eye and made a phone callhis son-in-laws life was about to unravel.

Emily stood in the doorway, greeting her parents with her usual cheerful smile. Only the dark, swollen eye betrayed the subject she refused to discuss.

Mum, its nothing, dont worry about it, she said quickly, catching her mothers sharp glance.

Margaret sighed deeply. Its your life, love. Youve got to live it
Her father didnt even acknowledge his son-in-law. He walked slowly to the window and stared blankly outside, as if deaf to his daughters muttered excuses about a wardrobe and the dark.

I just tripped last night. Come on, Mum, everythings fine with me and James!

Fine? Emily remembered perfectly what had happened. James, always quick to anger, hadnt just shouted at her. When she dared to say shed had enough, hed grabbed her dressing gown collar so hard it tore at the neck.

What, you stupid cow, dont you remember who kept you alive when you were running off with that bloke Daniel?! hed roared, shaking her. Who dragged you home from the pub when you tried to leave me? Who loved you, you ungrateful little tramp? I carried you in my arms!

Then came the punch. A real, proper punch. Stars burst behind her eyes, pain swallowed her whole and James kept screaming obscenities.

Yes, love. Wardrobe dark, murmured her mother, though she knew exactly what had happened.

Guilt gnawed at her. She was the one whod pushed Emily to marry James! She was the one whod chased Daniel away, convinced he was a bad influence.

That wardrobe of yours, love, seems to have fists, Margaret said pointedly, shooting a glance at her son-in-law.

William never turned from the window. He stepped onto the balcony for a smoke. Unlike his wife, hed never liked Jamesfound him shallow, selfish. Yes, he came from moneyflat in London, flash car, connections. But he was rotten inside.

Now the rot had surfaceda bruise under his daughters eye.

Of course, William couldve grabbed James by the lapels and decked him. But that wouldve just caused a scene. So he stepped outside.

He knew how to handle this differently. And he already had a plan.

Hed spent a long time on the phone out there…

Meanwhile, Emily bought her mother a coffee, and they chatted about nothing. Half an hour later, her parents left.

James, expecting a shouting match, finally relaxed. He flopped onto the sofa, cracked open a beer, even smirked. To him, their silence meant approval. Family sticks together, bruises happen. No one steps in.

See, Em? Told you itd blow over! he drawled, smug. Your parents are decent, not like you Yapping at me last night! So I had a drinkbig deal?

He took a swig and reached for crisps.

His smugness didnt last.

Not half an hour later, someone knocked. Not rang. Knocked. Firm. Authoritative. James froze, put his beer down, and crept to the door. Peeked through the peephole and went pale.

Daniel stood there. His rival. Emilys ex. The one whod almost married her. Tall, handsome, confident. In a sharp suit, with that smirk that made women weak and men want to hit him.

What dyou want? James growled, opening the door just enough to glare.

Step aside, Daniel said calmly, shoving past him with a shoulder.

James stumbled back like a ragdoll.

Emily stood up, wide-eyed.

Daniel

Pack your things, he said curtly. Youre coming with me. My place, your parentsdoesnt matter. But youre not staying with this washed-up loser.

Who you calling a loser, mate? James snapped, but stayed rooted in the corner.

He had reasons to be afraid of Daniel.

I called you, Jimmy boy, Daniel smiled. Didnt want to interfere. But when Emilys dadsolid bloke, by the wayrang and said youd hit her? Well, I decided to take over.

What what are you on about?! James croaked.

Didnt just barge in, of course, Daniel chuckled. That club you lease? Belongs to a mate of mine. A very good mate. Youll get noticelease isnt being renewed. Already sent to your office.

James sat down hard, like hed been winded.

Oh, and I ran the numbers. Youve got six months of back rent. Remember how they said itd go up when you turned profit? Well, it did. Six months ago. You just never read the notice. Me and my mate Mike let the debt pile up. Penalties, interest You get it? Youre officially in the red. Want me to name the figure?

Daniel leaned in.

And I know you havent got a penny to pay it. Shouldve spent less time drinking with your slag mates.

James deflated like a punctured balloon.

This this is a setup! he wheezed. You you planted those papers!

Think what you want, Daniel shrugged. Sue me. But your lawyer? Resigned. Or did you sack him? Wholl defend you now? Your bartender with the nose ring?

James opened his mouth, but nothing came out.

Emily, lets go. Dont bother packing. Ill buy you whatever you need. The rubbish here isnt worth keeping.

Daniel, wait, Emily said, dazed. This is all so sudden. I dont understand

Sudden is taking a punch and making excuses for the man who gave it. Everything else is too slow.

Daniel held out his hand. She took it.

Youve all lost it! James roared. This is my house! My wife!

Wife? Daniel scoffed. Youre the husband who hits her, then hides behind a beer and the telly? Youre not a man, James. Youre a joke. Loud, bitter nothing. Cant even throw a proper punch.

But I I James stammered.

Whats your move? Take me to court? Daniel narrowed his eyes. Tell them about the wardrobe that gave her a black eye? Or how your club failed because you drank instead of worked, riding your dads coattails?

Emily followed Daniel without looking back. Only at the door did she pause:

Sorry, James. Goodbye.

Piss off, then! he spat. Yeah go on

And they left.

Two days later, James sat in an empty flat. His club was shut. Papers piled on the tablelease denial, debt notices.

Daniel wasnt just an ex. He was an ex with connections. Hed waited for the right momentthen struck, perfectly.

Meanwhile, peace settled in Emilys parents home. Her mum cooked, her dad read the paper.

Then Emily walked in.

Hi, she said.

Whereve you been, love? James calling? her father asked sternly.

I was with Daniel.

So you left James?

Yes. Im done.

Her mum clasped her hands. Her father just nodded.

Good. Thats my girl, he said, grinning. And if that idiot comes near you again, Ill knock his teeth out.

Dad did you call Daniel? Emily asked.

Course I did. Who else? He winked. Good lad. Proper businessmanunlike that waste of space.

Thank God youre rid of him! her mum burst out. Im sorry, loveI nearly ruined your life. Thank heavens you never had kids with James

Oh, Margaret, always so dramatic, her dad laughed. But shes rightyou figured it out. Thats what matters.

Outside, Daniel leaned against his black Range Rover, smirking. He knew. No one would ever lay a hand on Emily again.

Well, except maybe with love. But thats another story.
