Tom refused to marry his pregnant girlfriend. His mum backed him, but his dad stood up for the unborn child.

“Dad, Ive got news,” Tom said the moment he walked in. “The neighbours girl, Emily shes pregnant. Its mine.”

Arthur, his father, paused for a second before replying calmly, “Well, youd best marry her then.”

“Are you having a laugh? Im too young for this. Its not the time to start a familywe werent even serious!”

“Serious?” Arthur let out a dry chuckle. “You were man enough to chase after her, but now its time to own up, youre suddenly a kid. Right.” Without another word, he called out, “Margaret! Come here!”

Margaret walked in, wiping her hands on her apron. “Whats all this?”

“Listen. Our boys got Emily next door pregnant, and now he wont do the decent thing.” With that, he stormed off.

Margaret didnt even blink. Her face hardened. “And hes right. Why bring home the first girl who comes along? These modern girls are craftythey latch onto a lad with prospects, get themselves in trouble, and suddenly its marry me. Whos to say the babys even his? He should get a DNA test. And anyway, we cant force Tomhes still young. Hes only human, temptations hard to resist. But were not raising someone elses mistake.”

Arthur sighed deeply, speaking softly. “What if it *is* his?”

“And if it is? Are we bound to fix his mess? Tell him to take the test, then well see.” She turned on her heel and went back to the kitchen, leaving Arthur alone with his son.

“Look I was young once too,” Arthur began. “Fancied one girl, married another. Not for lovefor duty. Being a man isnt just about passion. Its choices, and consequences. Your mum was expecting. I didnt know if I could love her, but I knew one thingthat baby wasnt to blame. My blood, my conscience. And Tom? Ive never regretted staying.”

Three months later, the DNA test came back clear: 99.9% chance Tom was the father of Emilys baby.

“Well?” Margaret scoffed when Arthur laid the paper in front of her. “Fine, its his. But that doesnt mean Emilys setting foot in this house. Not on my watch!”

Tom sat silent, avoiding his dads eyes. His face said it allhed chosen his mums side. Clenching his fists, he stayed quiet.

Arthur rose slowly from the table. “Since youve both made your choice, now hear mine.” His voice was low but steel-steady. “As long as I live, my grandson will want for nothing. Ill buy land, build a househell have everything Ive worked for. And you two? Forget my help. I wont be part of this shame. Tom, from today, youre no son of mine. Everything I own goes to the boy. You wont get a penny.”

Margaret exploded. “Have you lost it? Disowning your own flesh and blood?!”

Arthur didnt answer. He turned and walked out, ignoring the shouts and curses behind him. Tom stood frozen in the silence, stunned by his fathers words. But he knew one thingif Arthur said it, he meant it.
