The Flat Was Purchased by My Son: Mother-in-law’s Declaration
The flat was bought by my son: a mother-in-laws declaration
I first met my husband while we were both at university, each of us twenty at the time and full of youthful ambition. He caught my eye immediatelyhe stood out for his strength, intellect, and most importantly, his kind nature. We started out as friends, but before long, I realised my feelings for him ran much deeper.
A few months later, we became a couple. I still look back fondly on those times and believe that my university years were truly the happiest days of my life.
A year on, James proposed. We didnt have much money for a lavish celebration, so we marked the occasion quietly with our closest family. It was intimate and filled with joy.
By our second year together, James had started working. At first, we lived in halls, and owning a place of our own felt like a distant dream. Still, we both believed it would happen for us one day. Eventually, it did. When my grandmother passed away, she left me £100,000, and James had managed to save up a little as well. That was enough for us to put down a deposit and get a mortgage for a two-bedroom flat, as we were thinking about starting a family soon.
We stayed married for ten years, but children never came. A few years ago, Jamess work took a bad turn. His company got into trouble, and the owner ended up blaming James, who was working as the head accountant, for both the debts and the muddled bookkeeping. After a lengthy court case, James was wrongly sent to prison for four years.
I wanted what was best for him
We fought the verdict for a long time, searching for solicitors and hoping for the best, but ultimately things didnt go our way. The paperwork was stacked against him; James had only ever followed his bosss instructions, but it didnt matter in the eyes of the law.
Supporting my husband became my sole focus, but after a year I began to realise I needed someone to lean on myself…
That was when my mother-in-law turned up at my door and told me I could no longer live there. She blamed me for everything that had happened to James and insisted hed bought the flat with his own money, so I had no rights whatsoever. I was stunnedI never expected such coldness from her.
As it turned out, before the trial, James had given his mother power of attorney, and with it, she got a statement showing that the mortgage payments came from his account. My mother-in-law claims that these documents are all she needs to prove in court that I had no part in buying the flat.
Im lost and have no idea what to do next…
