Bad Neighbour

Theres a certain kind of person whose company is nearly impossible to tolerate. Very few people truly enjoy dealing with the so-called toxic types. Let me share with you an episode, inspired by an old friends recounting. Im jotting this down, drawing from the impressions she left me with regarding that nerve-wracking day.

I have a genuinely comfortable relationship with a most dear relative. Were always honest with each other, making time for visits over a cup of tea whenever we can. So, on this particular occasion, I decided to pay Emily a visit. I picked up a Victoria sponge on my way and headed over to hers.

My timing, unfortunately, was off. Emily was already entertaining someone. It turned out her guest was Mrs. Jenkins, her next-door neighbour. An older lady with a keen liking for gin. Shes notorious for spending her entire pension down at the off-licence, though she detests drinking alone. Mrs. Jenkins tends to loiter around the hallway, searching for a companion to share a tipple with. Shes excruciatingly persistent.

I do my best to steer clear of Mrs. Jenkins. I simply cant manage her company. She talks incessantly, without filter or thought. Frankly, she seems hardly aware of what shes doing at any given moment. So, I always make sure to treat her with the utmost reserve, bordering on cold. This time, I was already contemplating a swift exit, but Emily implored me to stay. In the end, I obliged. After all, I wasnt planning to linger long. While Emily put the kettle on, Mrs. Jenkins launched into her usual ramblings.

Not everyone can handle someone quite like her. She invariably pushes me to the point of exasperation sometimes I could laugh, other times I could cry. Emily, bless her, has peculiar tastes when it comes to company. If it were me, theres no chance Id allow a neighbour so desperately dull into my flat.

I made up my mind to leave quickly. Id heard enough nonsense for one day. Later that evening, Emily told me about what happened after Id gone. Another friend of hers dropped round. At first, all was tranquil, but inevitably, Mrs. Jenkins couldnt resist her old tricks.

It spiralled to the point that Emily and her other friend ended up in the middle of a heated argument.

You wouldnt believe it, Emily confided, Mrs. Jenkins wound us up so thoroughly the pair of us nearly came to blows. Never before have I experienced anything like it…

Finally, I wrapped my head around the meaning of toxic. Mrs. Jenkins is the living embodiment of the word. No matter the situation, conflict seems to follow in her wake. Even the other residents know full well none of them want anything to do with her. Only Emily tolerates her antics.

But now, it seems even Emily has begun to see sense. She explained, You know, Helena and I have been best friends for absolute ages. Weve been through it all together. But Mrs. Jenkins, shes some kind of expert at turning one person against another We were rowing over utter trivia. I asked Helena how she felt, and she said it was like being hypnotised. Can you imagine?

At last, Emily saw reality for what it was. Not every conversation is worth engaging in. Its far better to keep ones distance from such characters. And, for my part, I realised just how fortunate I am where I live. Everyone in my building is thoroughly decent.

A while later, Emily updated me: Mrs. Jenkins had moved out. Her flat was up for sale, and shed gone to live with her daughter, something to do with family troubles. Since then, the buildings been peaceful. Its remarkable how just one person can create upheaval in the lives of so many at once.

Im convinced now that our environment makes a tremendous difference. I sincerely wish for everyone to have a normal family and sensible neighbours. Lifes too short to waste your nerves on all that drama.
