“I’ve Got Loads of Notebooks! – The Story of Escorting Our Son’s Teacher to School”
A few years ago, we moved into a new neighbourhood. Before that, my son used to walk to the school on the estate, but it became inconvenient, so we decided it was best to find a school closer to home.
We found a school about a mile away. Since I work remotely, Im able to drop my son off and pick him up by car. The new school is quite moderntheres always something interactive happening, and the teachers are friendly. Ive met them at parents evenings. Above all, I liked Emily, who taught French. She was also my sons class teacher.
It turned out she lived just around the corner. When my son changed schools, we started bumping into her occasionallyat the park, the local market, or Tesco. One morning, as I stepped outside, she was heading straight towards me. It was early, so I knew she was on her way to school. I had little choice but to give her a lift.
Emily, hop in James is just about to leave, so well all head to school together.
She agreed without hesitation. It wasnt an issue for me at all. We drove to school, she thanked me, and went on her way. James felt awkward about giving his teacher a lift, wondering if it was strange to be so familiar with a teacher.
It happened a few more times by accident, until I noticed there seemed to be some sort of pattern.
Another two or three occasions went by where I gave her a lift unexpectedly. Then, in April, I got a text.
Good morning. Are you heading to school today?
The message was from his teacher. I replied that we were. I looked outsideshe was already standing by the car, almost pacing. Even my son wasnt prepared for this twist, and, to be honest, I felt a bit embarrassed myself. I went out and moved towards the car park.
She seemed delighted. Im so glad I could get a lift today. Ive brought all three packs of exercise bookstheyre quite heavy, difficult to carry.
I couldnt refuse. But I realised it couldnt go on like this. Something had to be done. The teacher was becoming quite cheeky. I decided to drop a hint:
Emily, what if we agree to meet here tomorrow at the same time so nobody has to wait for anyone, and well give you a lift.
I hoped shed politely decline.
Oh, thats brilliant! That means I can have twenty extra minutes of sleep every day! So, Ill be at yours at 8:00 every morning!
What a situation James shot me a disgruntled lookI knew he wasnt happy. Now I have to figure out how to sort this. I reckon Ill end up back at the office supplies shop, since I cant think of any sensible reason to refuse a teacherThe next morning, true to her word, Emily appeared at precisely eight, waving from the curb, her bags in tow and an infectious smile on her face. James slid into his seat, looking resigned, and I watched as the routine seamlessly began to settle in. At first, I worriedwould this strange new ritual strain boundaries, or even disrupt Jamess comfort at school?
But over the weeks, something unexpected happened. During our daily drives, laughter replaced awkward silences. Emily shared funny anecdotes from class, James chimed in with his own stories, and soon our car became a lively bubble of conversation, like a miniature community on wheels. Even the morning fog of tiredness lifted; Emily brought croissants one day, James insisted on playing his favorite playlist another.
One Friday, as we pulled up to the school gates, Emily stopped before stepping out. She looked at James, then at me, her voice softer than usual.
This has been the best part of my morningsthank you, she said.
James grinned, the discomfort gone. Its actually kind of cool, having my teacher around.
Emily winked. Just remember, I grade your homework like everyone else.
We laughed together, the tension finally dissolved.
That afternoon, James came home and said, You know, I dont mind giving Emily lifts. Its made school feel a lot closerlike we belong.
And he was right. What began as an awkward convenience had turned into something genuinea connection that blurred the lines between school and home, reminding us that sometimes, the best unexpected routines are the ones that open doors to friendship.
From then on, every morning felt less like a chore and more like a welcome, shared adventure. As the seasons changed and plans shifted, our little carpool circle became a cherished part of our livesa simple, unexpected twist that transformed the ordinary school run into something unforgettable.
