I Divorced My Husband and Now He’s Happier Than Ever—He Claims I Was the One Holding Him Back From Living a Normal Life

No one has ever insulted me more deeply than my ex-husband.

We havent seen each other for the last three months. The last time was when I drove our daughter over for the weekend. Only twelve weeks have gone by, and somehow, hes changed a great deal.

For years, I encouraged him to lose weight, but he never wanted to listen. He kept piling on the pounds with takeaways and endless fizzy drinks, lounging about in his spare time, never keen to step outside, let alone join a gym. Now, there he is an exercise mat rolled out right in the middle of his flat, impossible to miss. Hes got a fresh haircut, and his clothes are well-pressed, although theres no one around to sort him out these days. For years, I tried without luck to get him to learn how to use the washing machine. Suddenly, he can do everything himself.

So we talked

Id heard enough. He told me Id always underestimated him throughout our marriage, and that was why he used to act so carelessly, but not anymore. Now, its just him, and my daughter and I are no longer in his future plans. He has someone new, someone who, he claims, makes him happy, someone for whom hes working on his body, his manner, and even his finances. That cut me the deepest. He never tried to change for me or his daughter, yet hes transformed himself for this woman.

People say you get what you give in a relationship, but my ex was never one for returning the favour. I loved him, respected him, and only now and then gently commented, because he himself never believed anything needed changing. But I never really got anything back from him

Even after we split up, his priority was always himself, never the daughter he hadnt bothered to visit for months. Sometimes I wish he could have been in my shoes, just for a while, put in the effort, and seen what it felt like to receive so little in return. But who really knows

If theres one thing Ive learnt, its this: you cant make someone care, no matter how hard you try. Sometimes, the best you can do is focus on your own happiness and move forward, hoping your child learns to expect better than you ever did.
