Making Loads of Money, Aren’t You? My Sister-in-Law Borrowed Cash and Took Off to Brighton Beach

Published

on

This summer, my wifes beloved younger sister came to stay with us. I often jokingly called her the favourite because, at every family gathering, her name was constantly on everyones lipsMum, Dad, the lot. Shed been a star student in school, graduated from a good university, and landed a job straight away in her field. Wasnt she simply the perfect daughter?

By contrast, I, the eldest child, hadnt even finished my degree before I got married, but that never seemed to matter much because I was rather well-off. I owned my own business, had a flat in London, a decent car, and a comfortable income. Yet, somehow, the family still saw my wifes younger sister, Grace, as the golden child.

So, this summer, Grace turns up and asks if she could borrow some money. She wanted to put down a deposit on a flat and needed a bit extra for the mortgage deposit. It wasnt an unmanageable sum for me, so I agreed without much concern. She assured me she worked at the council and would pay back every month without fail.

She took the money, promising faithfully to stick to the repayment plan. But just a week later, I was surprised to hear shed jetted off to Cornwall for a seaside holiday. I must admit, I was a bit puzzledafter all, someone who claims they cant scrape together enough for a mortgage deposit somehow managed to find cash for a beach break.

To her relatives, she swore shed scrimped and saved all year for the trip, but there was something fishy about the story: she hadnt actually bought the flat or taken out the mortgage. When I asked her directly, she blithely said shed changed her mind.

I politely requested she return the money, as Id lent it for a flat, not a holiday. She responded by telling me she was skint after her trip and had spent every penny by the sea. Thats when it struck meshe never intended to buy a flat at all.

I asked again, as courteously as I could, that she repay her debt soon, but her reply was both dismissive and hurtful: Ill be making loads soonsurely you can wait. Theres no money right now!

So, how did it all end? Well, just as you might think. She went and told my mother-in-law that Id demanded the money back ahead of time, and insisted thats not how you treat family. Before long, Grace was back on her pedestal as the familys angel, while my wife and I were cast as the greedy, wealthy villains.

If theres anything to be learned from this, its that generosity should always be offered with care. Family is precious, but its equally important to set boundaries and not let kindness be mistaken for an invitation to be taken advantage of. After all, respect for one another should go both ways.
