The Neighbour from Hell

Published

on

Theres a certain type of person you just cant stand being around. Hardly anyone enjoys the company of these so-called toxic people. Let me share an incident, based on a story a friend of mine once told me. Ill write it, drawing from her impressions.

I have a good relationship with a relative Im rather close to. Were open with each other, and we often pop round for visits. This time, I decided to call on Emily for a cuppa. I picked up a nice lemon drizzle cake on the way and headed over.

Unfortunately, I didnt choose the right moment. Emily already had company. It turned out her neighbour was there Dorothy. Dorothy is an older lady who drinks far too much. She spends her entire pension on gin, and she cant stand drinking alone. So Dorothy is always wandering up and down the corridor, seeking out someone to share a drink with. Frankly, shes incredibly intrusive.

I always try to steer clear of Dorothy, because I personally cant take her. She just rambles endlessly. She hasnt a clue what shes saying half the time. Thats why Im icy cold towards her. I was actually about to take my leave, but Emily begged me to stay. I didnt object. After all, I wasnt planning to stay long anyway. While the kettle was boiling, Dorothy started yabbering away.

Not everyone is cut out to cope with this sort of person. She either drives me up the wall or makes me laugh out loud. Emily has a strange tolerance for this. Honestly, if I were her, Id never let such a tiresome neighbour through my front door.

I quickly decided Id better go. I was fed up listening to her relentless nonsense. Later, Emily told me what happened after I left. Another friend had come by to visit. At first, everything was calm, but then Dorothy started stirring things up.

Things escalated to the point where Emily and her friend had a row.

You wouldnt believe it, Emily told me later. Dorothy wound us up so much, we nearly came to blows. Id never had an experience like that in my life

That was when I finally understood what toxic really means. Someone like Dorothy fits the bill perfectly. With her, arguments start out of nowhere. In fact, all the neighbours know of her no one wants to get involved. Only Emily puts up with her shenanigans.

But now, shes slowly starting to get the picture. Emily went on:

You see, Helena and I have been best friends for years weve been through everything together. Now it seems like Dorothys made it her mission to turn us against each other. We were squabbling over the most absurd things. I even asked Helena how it made her feel, and she said it was like shed been hypnotised. I suppose these things do happen, dont they?

Emilys finally seen the truth. Theres no use trying to get along with absolutely everyone. Its best to steer clear of people like that. As for me, I realised Im quite content where I live everyone in my block is decent and reasonable.

Later on, Emily told me Dorothy had moved out. The flat was up for sale, and shed gone to live with her daughter, due to some family issues. The building is peaceful at last. Its true what they say one person really can disrupt the lives of so many others.

The company you keep truly matters. I wish everyone good neighbours and a calm home life. After all, no one has enough sanity left to deal with so many eccentrics.
