An Old Lady Adopted a Central Asian Shepherd Puppy: The Dog Grew Up to Guard Everything, Devoured a Bowl of Food in Seconds, Scratched Her Back on the Fence Until It Bent, and Even Tried to Drag the Old Lady Away with One Pull
One old lady decided to get herself an English Mastiff puppy. The pup grew up fast and always kept guard over the little cottage. She would wolf down a massive bowl of food in seconds, and scratch her back so vigorously against the fence that it warped the old panels. Sometimes, the dog would make such a sudden lunge when I walked past that I wondered if shed pull the whole house down with her. You have to give a growing puppy something to do, after all.
But then, the old lady passed away. Not because of the dogjust simply didnt make it to ninety. So the children and grandchildren arrived at the home in the Cotswolds where she had lived. And there, on a chain in the garden, sat the dog. By the look in her eyes, it was clear she held no grudges. Its not every day you get a whole influx of new people, all bringing with them the promise of fresh treats and different snacks. The family began debating what on earth to do with her. It felt heartless to put her to sleep, but it was a bit terrifying to live alongside her, and just letting her loose would have been nothing short of insanity. The world isnt so wicked to deserve such a challenge. Eventually, it was decided shed be handed over to loving hands. And, if required, theyd even throw in a little extra to sweeten the deal. For anyone willing to take on this shaggy beast, nothing was too precious to sacrifice.
Soon enough, they found a fellow named George who had always dreamt of a life spent feeding big dogs and scratching behind their ears with a rake. People have all sorts of peculiar cravings, dont they? A vet was called in.
They explained their master plan to the vet: best to sedate her and transport her quickly to her new home. Just remember to cross themselves and light a candle for Georges good fortune. Or perhaps say a little prayer for his soulwho could say how itd go?
At the agreed time, the vet arrived in Stratford-upon-Avon, armed with a tranquiliser gun. All vets are a bit heroic, I suppose. He loaded the syringe, delivered a single dose, and sent the dog off to the land of Nod. The chain was unclipped, and she was rolled gently onto an old tarpaulin.
They bundled her into the boot, which connected right through to the rest of the car. Naturally, the vet got the front seat for comforthe earned it. George, the new owner, took the wheel. All of Grannys relatives sat in the back, chatting away. Thats when the dog started to stir.
She raised her head and gazed curiously around the interior. People everywhere. All sitting and staring right back at her.
The vets eyes were like saucers. Georges face was identicalhe didnt even glance at the road, not once. He didnt much care that he was behind the wheel just then.
‘How interesting,’ thought the dog.
‘I wonder if there’s a heaven,’ the humans thought.
The dog immediately clambered into the passenger area, getting as close to the people as she could. Why hesitate? George tried to pull the door handle, ready to leap clear of the carnever mind that he was driving; survival clearly came first. The dog, meanwhile, gave everyone a good licking. All of Grannys familywell, they weren’t total strangers. And George, tooafter all, soulmates do come in all shapes. Even the vet got a lick, though hed been the one to shoot her. It was impossible to hold a proper grudge.
Thats how everyone came to realise theyd gotten it wrong about her being a monster. They drove the rest of the way absolutely soakeddripping from head to toe. From above, as the dogs enthusiastic kisses left everyone covered in slobber. From below, because their emotions were simply overflowing after that wild awakening.
Thats my familys precious old cottage and gardenforever a place for unexpected stories.
