How Emily Became a Mum Thanks to Her Big Heart

Emily stepped into the front hallway of her townhouse in Leeds and caught sight of a box plonked by her door. She gazed at it, perplexed. Curled up inside, nose-to-tail, were a rather sheepish-looking dog and cat. They eyed her nervously while doing their best impression of shivering cushions.

Well what on earth is this? And who exactly are you? Emily wondered aloud, half-expecting the furry orphans to launch into a conversation.

At that moment, Mrs. Rita from next door popped her head out.

Oy, Emily, love. You seen the parcel too? Shame about Val on the second floor. Shes popped her clogs, and her niece clearly couldnt be bothered to sort the poor animals.

She tried everyone. No one bit. Ive got my own catwont share his territorysomeones got allergies, blah blah Any chance you and Michael could take them in? Youre young, you earn well enough, and no children to chase, eh?

We werent exactly planning on pets right now, especially not two Emily spluttered.

You really shouldnt split them up, dear. Thick as thieves, those two. They even slept together. Mrs. Mac always walked the dog, while the cat had the run of the gardenno hassle at all, honestly.

Go on, love? Mrs. Rita started pleading in a rather tragic voice.

And if we dont? Emily asked, suddenly wary. What happens to them?

Theyre for the needle, so I heard. Box and all, ready to nip off to the vets. New people are moving in; flats practically sold. No one wants the baggage, apparently… Mrs. Rita shook her head.

As though on cue, a chap from upstairs shuffled in and caught Emily’s eye. He gave the box a nudge.

Want to give them a go? Theyre quiet, eat hardly anything, and are getting on a bit. Doubt theyll be trouble. Poor old Val loved them no one else cares.

Oh, alright then! I cant bear the thought of them being put down. What are their names? Weve only lived here a couple of years, not met many folks yet… Emily replied, visibly capitulating. The man lit up and promptly deposited the box in Emilys hallway.

The dogs Charlie, and the cats Percy. Bless you, really He left a crisp £20 note and a tatty lead on the sideboard. Just to help out, at first. Cheers again

Emily closed the door and hung up her coat. She crouched down and started chatting with her new houseguests.

So, chaps? Michaels going to be astonished. Ill give him a right fright! Bet hell threaten to evict us. Then again, hes a softie, so hell probably give in…

Dont worry, lads. No ones getting rid of you on my watch. To thinkputting you down! They do come up with some rubbish

The catPercy, as he was now officially knownseemed to get the gist and daintily climbed out to inspect the hall. Charlie the dog, meanwhile, stayed put for ages, simply surveying the landlady and his feline mate with mournful eyes.

Emily headed to the kitchen and inspected her fridge. No pet food, of course. So, she rustled up some porridge, tossed in chunks of meat, and declared that it would just have to do for both.

To her relief, Percy, after touring the flat, sauntered into the kitchen and eyed up the bowl. Emily beckoned Charlie as well.

He dawdled for a bit, but a hearty appetite roused him when he saw the cat chomping enthusiastically on the meaty bits. He looked up at Emily with his big brown eyeshalf begging, half hopeful.

Michael, Emilys husband, returned from work soon afterand yes, his face was a picture. Still, after decades of marriage bliss (well, four years), and no kids to fuss over, they tentatively agreed to see if they could find the pair a roomier home, maybe even a nice country house.

Emily and Michael bought their own flat just two years ago. They loved each other dearly, living in peacewith only the faintest shadow cast by their lack of children.

Youre always fussing about the place being spotless. Didnt think pets were on your wish list Michael mumbled, bewildered.

Well, I thought wed have children by now. But instead, here we areanimals, facing the chop. Honestly! I just couldnt let it happenI couldnt Sorry… Emilys voice wobbled, eyes glistening.

I like animals too, Em. Its fine; well look after them. Ill put the word out at work, see if anyone wants a couple of golden oldies, Michael reassured her.

From that day on, family life shifted. Charlie and Percy adapted remarkably fast. As it happened, their old flat was just above Emily and Michaelsthe same layout, same garden. It was practically home-from-home for the furry pair.

Good work, chaps! Feels like you two have lived here forever, Emily would say.

Emily established a brisk schedule: three walks a day with Charlie, while Percy found his way out the window for adventures and back in againperfect for Emilys newly implemented routine.

Mrs. Rita, ever the benevolent neighbour, supplied Charlie with bones from her Sunday roast and saved bits of porridge for Percy.

Each evening, Michael and Emily would find themselves in stitches while Percy tackled a new toy and Charlie sprawled contentedly on his new bed.

The furballs always slept snuggled up. Clearly inseparable, and the couple soon realised separating them was out of the question.

A few months in, Emily and Michael called off the search for new homes. Theyd become hopelessly attached.

Emilys mum would visit on weekends, harbouring a secret fondness for Percy and Charlie, though initially find their arrival…ambitious.

Id take old Percy, but Im stuck on the third floor. Hed mope for the garden, Mum lamented.

But Emily refused outright. No, Mum, well need your help when we go on holiday! You can come round, water the plants and look after the animals.

When summer arrived, off they went to the seaside for a week. Emily phoned her Mum every other hour, checking in on both the animals and the resident flora.

All grand, love. Your fluffy duo eat well, sleep together, and we stroll in the garden daily. You just keep relaxing! Mum chirped.

On their return, Emily was bowled over by the tail-wagging and acrobatics that greeted them. Charlie all but somersaulted, barking with delight.

Aftcat (thats Percy) waited his turn, then twined round Michaels legs, purring like a milk float up a hill.

Crikey, they actually like us, Michael beamed. Emily ruffled Charlies ears and set about feeding everyone.

Now she even got up earlyto walk Charlie and feed her two friends before work.

A couple of months later, Emily, fidgeting, told Michael a secret: she was finally expecting. There was no end to the joy.

Emilys mum declared, See, love, thats the universe thanking you. The animals were a test of your kindness and careand here you are, getting your reward. Time to brush up on motherhood.

Quite right, Mum. I agree, though of course I dont put much stock in all those old wives tales Emily replied, laughing. But thanks to Charlie and Percy, Im already in mothering mode: cleaning, feeding, grooming, and loving. Just like a real mum! Theyre my practice kids.

If you want, I could take them off your hands for a bit. Might be less chaos when the baby comes? Mum suggested.

Absolutely not, Mum! Emily said. Well manage. Besides, Ill need youand your pram-pushing skillswhen I need some peace. You can babysit for both the furry and the tiny!

They hugged.

Emilys pregnancy was smooth sailing. Right on cue, a bonny baby boy joined the family. Michael was over the moonalong with Emily and the rest of the clan.

Charlie, with his years and mellow ways, never uttered a bark. Percy did his own thing, lounging in the garden or snoozing in the flowerbed. It was peace on earth, full house guaranteed.

Thanks to Mrs. Ritas storytelling, Emilys tale became local legendhow her big heart turned her into a mum, and then some.

Mrs. Rita sold it as proof positive that the universe really does send something nice in return for a bit of kindness.

And what do you reckonwas Mrs. Rita onto something? Let us know in the comments below. Give us a likeThat Christmas, the whole flat was aglow. Fairy lights twinkled on the balcony; baby laughter mingled with Michaels carols, and Charlies tail thumped merrily in time with Percys prowling. Neighbours dropped by with little giftsdog biscuits gift wrapped, catnip mice tied with bows, and a tiny blue hat for the newest arrival.

Emily found herself pausing amidst the festive chaos, just to watch her familyold dog curled up with a blanket, cat warming the babys toes, Michael cradling a mug of cocoa and grinning at them all. In that moment, she understood: love made a family, no matter the shape it arrived in.

Down the hallway, Mrs. Rita watched it all unfold from her door, dabbing her eyes with a tea towel. Sometimes, she reckoned, you didnt need miracles. You just needed room enough in your heartand maybe a little bit of porridgeso no one was ever left out in the cold.

And from then on, whenever someone asked Emily if she had children, she simply smiled and said, YesIve got three. One with paws, one with whiskers, and one with dimples. And a house full of love.
