Across the diner, the man in the trench coat spun around, his eyes scanning the room with sudden panic when he realized the girl was gone. His gaze locked onto Silas’s booth. Silas didn’t give him the chance to think. He stood up slowly, his towering six-foot-five frame casting a massive shadow across the floor. The heavy leather of his riding vest groaned, and his boots hit the linoleum with a thud that seemed to make the neon lights flicker.

“”Hey, pal! We need to talk,”” Silas said, his voice cutting through the diner like a chainsaw.

Behind him, the little girl hid her face against the back of his vest. But as her forehead pressed into the leather, she stopped crying. Her small fingers reached out and touched a large, circular patch sewn into the center of his back—a roaring Grizzly Bear embroidered in deep crimson thread. The girl gasped, her breath catching in her throat as she traced the rough contours of the design.

“”Mommy told me…”” she whispered, a sudden, fierce hope breaking through her tears. “”She said if a bad man ever took me, and I saw the red grizzly bear… I had to run to him. She said the bear belongs to family, and he would fight for us.””

Silas felt a jolt of pure electricity shoot down his spine. He froze, his hands clenching into fists so tight his knuckles turned white. He looked over his shoulder, his voice shaking with a raw emotion he hadn’t felt in fifteen years. “”What’s your mommy’s name, little one?””

The girl pointed a trembling finger at the man at the counter, who was now slowly reaching into his coat, and whispered, “”Faith.””

Silas turned his gaze back to the stranger, his eyes narrowing into slits. The man tried to put on a smooth, arrogant smile, taking a cautious step backward toward the glass doors. “”Look, biker, you’re misunderstanding the situation,”” the man said, his voice slick but trembling. “”The lady gave me custody. She wanted out of her contract, said she couldn’t afford a kid anymore, and walked away willingly.””

“”Liar!”” the girl screamed, her voice echoing off the diner walls as she peeked out from behind Silas’s waist. “”He lied to Mommy! He told her the bridge ahead was collapsed and made her get out of the car in the fog to look. Then he locked the doors with the clicker, stole her purse from the seat, and sped off with me! He left Mommy all alone in the pitch black on the mountain road with no jacket!””

The atmosphere in the diner instantly turned suffocatingly hot. Four other large men in leather vests rose from their tables in perfect unison, their expressions grim. The bell above the door jingled as two more bikers stepped inside from the fog, crossing their arms and locking the exit. The perimeter was sealed.

Silas reached into his front pocket and pulled out an old, faded silver locket. He popped it open, revealing a picture of a teenage girl with the exact same bright green eyes as the child standing next to him. He showed it to her. The little girl clapped her hands over her mouth, fresh tears of joy spilling over her cheeks. “”That’s Mommy when she was big like you!””

The biker turned his full attention back to the stranger, who was now backed entirely against the counter, sweating through his expensive coat with nowhere left to run. Silas’s voice was lower than a graveyard whisper. “”Faith is my little sister. And you just ran completely out of road.””

The little girl yanked on Silas’s vest, pointing out into the foggy night. “”Uncle, we have to go back for her… she’s still out there in the dark, trying to walk through the fog…”””
