Across the diner, the man in the wool coat spun around, his eyes scanning the room with sudden panic when he realized the child was no longer where he had told her to stand. His frantic gaze locked instantly onto Jax’s booth. Jax didn’t give him a chance to speak. He stood up slowly, drawing himself to his full, towering height. The heavy leather of his riding vest creaked ominously, and his heavy boots hit the floorboards with a dull thud that made the entire room go quiet.

“”You and I need to have a chat,”” Jax rumbled, his voice vibrating through the small diner.

Behind his back, the little girl hid her face against his jacket. But as her tiny fingers clutched the rough leather, her eyes caught the massive, vintage patch embroidered across the center of his back—a silver Thunderbird with piercing sapphire eyes and wings spread wide. The child froze, her breath catching in her throat. She gently traced the thick silver threads, and the sheer terror in her eyes suddenly shattered, replaced by a wave of breathless relief.

“”Mommy told me…”” she whispered, her voice suddenly alive with a desperate, unyielding hope. “”She told me if I was ever scared or in danger, and I saw a man with the silver Thunderbird on his back… I should run to him as fast as I could. She said he is family, and he would never let anyone hurt us.””

Jax felt his heart slam against his ribs like a sledgehammer. He partially turned his head toward her, his rough voice cracking with an emotion he hadn’t felt in a decade. “”What’s your mama’s name, little one?””

The girl looked at the man by the counter, who was now slowly backing toward the door, and whispered, “”Maya.””

Jax snapped his gaze back to the stranger, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure fury. The man tried to force a confident, arrogant smile onto his face, raising his gloved hands defensively. “”Look, big guy, you’re getting the wrong idea here. Her mother gave the kid to me for the weekend. Said she needed a break from being a parent and just walked away.””

“”He’s lying!”” the little girl cried out, bravely peeking from behind Jax’s broad shoulder. “”He tricked Mommy! He told her our back tire was flat in the snow and made her get out to check it. Then he locked the doors from the inside, grabbed her purse, and drove away with me! He left Mommy all alone in the freezing blizzard on that dark mountain pass with no phone!””

The atmosphere in the diner instantly turned heavy enough to suffocate. Four other large men in leather vests rose from their tables in perfect unison, abandoning their meals without a word. The bell above the entrance chimed sharply as two more bikers stepped inside from the snow, crossing their massive arms and completely sealing off the exit. The trap had snapped shut.

Jax reached into the inner pocket of his vest and pulled out an old, slightly faded silver medallion with the exact same Thunderbird motif. He showed it to the little girl. The child touched the cold metal, fresh tears of joy spilling over her lashes. “”Yes! That’s Mommy’s favorite story!””

The biker turned his gaze back to the stranger, who was now pressed flat against the wooden counter, his face pale and sweating, with absolutely nowhere left to run. Jax’s voice was colder than the arctic wind outside. “”Maya is my little sister. And you just ran completely out of road.””

The little girl tugged Jax’s vest once more, pointing urgently toward the freezing night. “”Uncle, we have to hurry… she’s still out there in the cold, trying to survive the storm by the old mile marker…”””
