A Man Refused to Give Up His Seat for a Mother and Child—Should He Be Held Accountable?

Published

on

I was coming back from the shopping centre with my son. Beside us stood a woman with her child, who happened to be just about the same age as my own.

The bus was packed with passengers. I spotted a young man listening to music through his headphones, so I politely asked if he would mind giving up his seat. He stood up straight away, and my son and I sat down. My son even offered him a sweet as a thank you. The young man looked a little embarrassed, but he smiled warmly.

Then I noticed the other mother attempting to imitate my approach. She literally began tugging at the collar of a man who was dozing off in his seat. The man, still half asleep, didnt react at first, so she raised her voice and started shouting. Startled, the man pulled off his headphones, clearly confused by the commotion.

Can’t you see Ive got a small child with me? Give us your seat! she yelled so loudly that even her own son burst into tears from fright. I dont want to move! the man protested, finally losing his patience.

I could honestly understand his reaction. He didn’t owe her anything. And frankly, no one deserves to be treated in such a rude and humiliating way. I suggested the mother let her little boy sit next to mine, but she was more interested in making a scene.

I’ve never behaved like that myself. If I need something, I always ask with courtesy. If someone offers their seat to my child, I sincerely thank them. If not, I respect their choice without complaint. Over all these years, Ive never once been refused.

Perhaps its because I never shout or berate strangers. Treating others with kindness and respect often opens doors, while rudeness only closes hearts. In the end, a little politeness goes a long way.
