Akhat’s Parents Strongly Opposed His Choice of Life Partner and Kicked Him Out, but He Stood Firm in His Decision to Be with Angelina, Whom He Met and Fell in Love with While Studying at University
When Williams parents realised hed chosen a partner not plucked from the approved guest list at the local golf club, they were less than delighted. In a ceremony that can only be described as family drama meets EastEnders, they promptly booted him out of the family homebye-bye Surrey, hello reality.
But William wasnt about to be swayed, not after falling head-over-heels for Emily while both were slogging through lecture halls at university. The issue? Emily didnt exactly fit the aristocratic image his parents pined for; she was absolutely lovely but not a member of the local tennis club, nor did she have a double-barrelled surname. The family expected William to uphold traditionpreferably one with cucumber sandwiches at the ready.
When Williams parents first caught wind of the romance, the response was less than civilthey even resorted to a bit of old-fashioned intimidation, trying to scare Emily off. When William finally hit his limit, he blurted out the whole saga to his mum. This predictably led to a shouting match worthy of a reality TV episode, culminating in dear old dad getting the boot for not agreeing with mums vision of family unity.
With few options left, William moved into Emilys poky little flat. Swiftly deciding theyd had quite enough of melodrama, the pair hitched up at the local registry office (no white doves, just a slightly overzealous registrar and some wonky bunting). Life threw a few hurdles their way, but thanks to the unwavering support from Emilys familyher parents and her indefatigable Aunt Margaretthings began to look up. They both found proper jobs, pooled their pennies, and managed to rent a modest flat. Soon enough, they launched their own small business, which, shockingly, didnt fail miserably.
Despite the blossoming business and the eventual arrival of some noisy offspring, Williams parents kept their distance, refusing to even acknowledge the existence of their new grandchildren. But on Emilys side, the welcome mat was out; her family even chipped in to help the couple buy a place of their own. As months ticked by, a sort of cautious truce crept inrelatives on both sides began popping round for tea and, slowly but surely, burned bridges were rebuilt.
Alas, just as things seemed idyllic(ish), a new hiccup emerged courtesy of Emilys mother-in-law. One evening after work (William sporting a slightly ill-fitting suit and Emily clutching supermarket meal deals), the couple returned to find their youngest son sobbing in a corner, having received a solid telling-offcomplete with a whackfrom his grandmother for refusing to eat his shepherds pie.
William politely yet firmly asked his mum to refrain from haranguing the grandchildren. She nodded as if in agreement, but the very next day, history repeated itself. This time, Emilyno longer the timid student William first metstood her ground, warning her mother-in-law in no uncertain terms that further misbehaviour toward her or the kids would result in an experience unpleasant enough to feature in her next bridge club chat.
Inevitably, William and his father returned home later to find his mother nursing a dramatic bruise and spinning a tale that painted Emily as the villain. Luckily, the little onenever one for a cover-upspilled the beans about what really happened. William and his father quickly grasped who was at fault, giving mum a stern talking-to.
Having lost his son once already due to his wifes stubbornness, Williams father had no intentions of letting the soap opera repeat itself. It seemed, finally, that Williams mum understood her place within the revamped family dynamicminus the melodramabringing peace to the household, and perhaps a round of tea for all.
