“Anna Is Still Young—She’ll Have More Children!” She Was Told. But In the End, No One Wanted the Chi…

“Emily is young, shell surely have more children!” she vowed. In the end, nobody had any need for the child.

Emily and James grew up together in a quiet English market town, sharing a school desk since childhood. When they finished school, both set off to university, dreaming of the bustling opportunities of London. After graduating, they took lodgings in a tiny flat, found jobs, and lived together, though never marrying. But when Emily discovered she was expecting, James left her behind. He had never intended on becoming a father.

Lost and shaken, Emily returned to her mothers house to raise her child. Jamess mother, a respected figure in their town, wasted no time in spreading unkind rumours: she told everyone that Emilys child was fathered by another man, claiming there was no connection to her own family. The situation was made worse by the fact that both families still lived in the same close-knit area. The tangled web of family gossip spun further.

Many of their old friends knew the truth. When Emily gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, she held no resentment toward Jamess family, longing only to raise her child in peace. But Jamess mother persisted in telling all who would listen that this child was no kin of hers.

“Look at them!” shed declare. “That babys got golden hair, whilst our whole lot are dark-haired! And just look at the nosetheres nothing of our family! Were handsome folk, but this child shes plain as a pikestaff! The mother is only trying to worm her way into our family. Its all a scheme!”

Emily, growing tired of the spite, proposed a paternity test to put the matter to rest, knowing James was indeed the father. The results were swift: Jamess mother promptly invited Emily to visit, desperate to meet her granddaughter at last. Lavish gifts soon followedexpensive prams, delicate bonnets, plush rabbits, and more. Emily, scraping by on her mothers pension, was grateful for the help.

A little while on, the new-found grandmother requested to have her granddaughter stay for a visit. Emily, anxious, explained her daughter was only a year oldmuch too young to leave her mother even for a few days. The grandmother grew cross.

She warned Emily sharply: she would see her in court for the right to visit, and perhaps to have the child live with her. After all, she argued, her son owned a flat in town, provided maintenance (with the papers to prove it), and Emily was neither employed nor married. The woman declared, Youre young, Emily! You can always have another child! Do the right thing and let her stay with us. All the judges here know me wellyou can guess which way the scales would tip! Emily stood her ground, determined to keep her daughter. For years, they fought a bitter court case.

The little girl whom the influential family had spurned became their greatest treasure, their pride and joy. Powerful relatives produced witnesses, hired private investigators, made complaints, took photographs. Emily was driven to leave town and hide. So much happened, it seemed a never-ending ordeal. But in time, things quieted. James married and had a son. His mother, all attention fixed on the newborn, let Emily and her daughter be. Emilys girl started school. Emily moved to London, but would often return home to see her daughter and ageing mother. In London, she met a young man. Her mother encouraged her to remarry and build a new life, promising to care for her granddaughter. Emily assured her that once things settled, she would bring her daughter to live with her.

Emily remarried. She and her new husband rented a little flat and awaited the arrival of their child. Yet, Emily hesitated to bring her daughter to London. She had nowhere suitable, and her husband was lukewarm about raising another mans child. Emily decided it better for her daughter to remain in her grandmothers care, near friends and her school. With a new baby coming and no one there to help, it seemed wisest to leave things as they were. At least the girl was cared for, and Emilys mother had company.

But then her mothers health began to fail. Ambulances made hurried visits, she was rushed to hospital more than once, and neighboursretired folk from next doorlooked after the granddaughter. Meanwhile, Jamess mother showed no further interest. When she bumped into Emilys mother, she would only smile thinly.

“You should have listened to me! If youd given me the girl at the start, Id have seen she was well cared for! Shed have gone to the finest grammar school by nowspeaking French and German, playing the piano! And yes, her mother gave her up. Who knows what shell become? Now I attend to my grandsonto him, Ill give the best education and every opportunity!”

James never once looked in on his daughter. So, the little girl, over whom families had fought and judges had decided, became a child wanted by no one. And as for what her future would hold, no one could say.
