At 54, I Went on Three Dates—with Women Aged 37, 45, and 58. Here’s What I Learned from the Experience

At fifty-four, I went on three dateswith women aged 37, 45, and 58. Heres what I learnt from the experience.

A good friend of mine, David, is my agefifty-four. Hes been married twice, has grown-up kids, and after his last divorce, he moved to London. He keeps himself fit, holds down a decent job, and isnt afraid of new beginnings. Not long ago, he told me about three dates that really opened his eyes.

First date, age 45: So wheres your car?

She was well put-together, self-assured, and conversation came easily enough. But the moment it became clear I dont own a car, her tone shifted.

How do you unwind if you dont drive?
What if it rains?
How do you get to shopping centres?

The same questions came up again and again, until it was obvious: she was more interested in what I had than who I was. I just smiled to myself: if youre after metal and not a soul, youre not for me.

Lesson learnt: Outward confidence doesnt always mean emotional maturity.

Second date, age 37: Im really into older men.

She was vibrant and full of energy, mother of two with a mortgage. She openly told me she was looking for a dependable man. I quickly realised it was more about finding stability than love. Still, we had a good laugh, and the conversation flowed.

It was enjoyable, but I didnt kid myself. Sometimes its just nice to have someone be interested in youno need for plans or promises.

Lesson learnt: Youth is exciting, but not always deep.

Third date, age 58: Now you owe me.

The evening began perfectly: an active, well-presented woman, clever conversation, plenty of laughs, mutual respect. But the very next morning, she rang me up:

Come on, were off to the cottage! Weve got to clear the snow off the roof!

I was taken aback. Helping out is one thing. But when its all ordersany fondness just slips away.

Lesson learnt: Independence is fabulous, but barking orders kills the mood.

So what do I take away from all this?

All three women were interesting in their own ways, each had their own story. But the main thing Ive realised is: Im not chasing drama anymore. I want someone with whom things are simple and honest. Where theres no pressure or manipulation.

After fifty, romance doesnt just disappearit becomes more thoughtful. And perhaps, thats when theres a real chance for love, the kind that isnt about illusionsjust warmth and honesty.
