“Come in, Mum, we’ve been waiting for you,” says her son, James, while her daughter-in-law takes her coat and offers slippers to her mother-in-law. Suddenly, the daughter-in-law’s smile gives way to a look of concern.
Come in, Mum, weve been waiting for you, said her son Daniel, as his wife Emma took her coat and passed her a pair of cosy slippers. Suddenly, with a glance at the floor, Emmas cheerful smile was replaced by a hint of worry.
Mary stepped into the lounge to greet the family, while Emma gave Daniel a quick nod towards the hallway floor damp footprints were clearly visible, tracing their way through the house. The two exchanged looks but decided not to bring it up, at least for now.
There was a joyful reason for their little gathering Daniel and Emma had recently welcomed twins, and now that the babies were a few months old, they wanted their closest family round to celebrate.
Mary, whod been a pensioner for a few years, arrived with beautifully knitted baby clothes shed made herself, as popping down to the shop for gifts was a bit out of reach with her small pension. Initially, she hadnt wanted to come along, feeling it would be easier to visit another time. But Daniel and Emma insisted she simply had to be there for such a special day.
Theyd named the boys Henry and Edward, which delighted Mary for a special reason her late husband was Edward, and her father had been Henry, so Daniel was clearly keeping a family tradition of names alive. She couldnt have been prouder.
What a sweet little chap, looks just like you, Emma. And this one takes after you, Daniel. Oh, but now Im confused, theyre two peas in a pod! Mary bustled around the cot, losing track of which twin was which, since the boys really were the spitting image of each other.
Daniel and Emma couldnt help but laugh, Marys happiness and the little worries she voiced only made the moment warmer.
Eventually, the guests trickled out, and Mary began getting ready to head off. Emma glanced at Daniel, who asked his mum if she wanted to stay over:
Mum, why not stay tonight? Its getting late and the buses are less frequent. You could also help us bathe the boys and put them to bed.
Alright, love, if you think so Mary replied, not one to argue.
She helped Emma clear the table, did the washing up, and made sure everything was put away. Then the three of them set about bathing the twins. You should have seen Marys eyes light up she was over the moon. Emma handed her one of the boys, but Mary gently protested, nervous shed drop him because he was just so tiny.
Mum, you managed with Daniel, and he turned out fine, didnt he? Emma teased, laughing.
That was a long time ago! Ive forgotten how to hold little ones, fretted Mary.
Emma put Henry in Marys arms, and as if by magic, he settled instantly and fell asleep, safe and sound. Emma took Edward and gently rocked him herself.
They made up a bed for Mary in the spare room so she could get some proper rest, but sleep was the last thing on her mind. She lay there, listening to hear if Henry or Edward stirred. All the fuss had worn her out, and she finally drifted off in the early hours.
The next morning, Mary woke to the smell of breakfast wafting from the kitchen, both babies still peacefully asleep.
Wheres Daniel? she asked in surprise, seeing only Emma.
Dont worry, Mum, sit down and eat. Daniel wont be long, Emma reassured her.
A few minutes later, Daniel returned, beaming, holding a big box.
For you, Mum. Go on, open it, he grinned.
Mary opened the box and found a brand new pair of boots inside. She was so surprised she could barely utter a word.
These are far too expensive, I cant possibly accept them, Mary said, holding back tears.
Not as precious as you are, Mum. Go on, try them and wear them in good health, said Daniel softly.
Mary tried on the boots, marvelling at how well they fit. She couldnt get over how theyd known just what she needed her old boots had long since lost their soles, well beyond repair, and she simply hadnt had the money for new ones.
Suddenly, one of the twins started to cry, and Mary, still in her brand new boots, hurried over to help.
Well done, love, thank you, Daniel whispered to Emma. I never would have thought of this on my own.
It wasnt hard to guess really. Your mums shoes were soaking yesterday, I saw the footprints and her old boots it was obvious. Three thousand pounds is a lot for us but your mum could never have managed it. She deserves them, Emma hugged Daniel gently.
And Mary felt such deep warmth in that moment maybe it was the new boots, or maybe it was just knowing her children needed her, and loved her more than anything.
