Forgive Me, My Son

Published

on

Oh mate, let me tell you about this its a tough but moving family story. So, picture this: a struggling family as people often quietly label them. Theres this mum, Alison Turner, raising her son, Jamie, all on her own ever since her marriage crumbled before Jamie could even walk. Fast forward, hes now 14, shes just turned 34, and shes working as a bookkeeper in a little community centre in Sheffield.

This last year has been utter chaos. Jamie used to do alright at school up until about Year 6, but then the marks started slipping, and it only got worse from there. All Alison wanted was for Jamie to at least finish school with some kind of qualification, anything to give him a start.

She kept getting dragged into meetings at school. His form tutor didnt hold back, having a go at her in front of all the staff, while everyone else chimed in with fresh tales about Jamies missteps or slipped grades. Alison would walk home, defeated and fuming, feeling like she had absolutely no power to fix any of it. Jamie took her lectures and nagging in silence, just sulking. He never did his homework, wouldnt even lift a finger around the house.

It was the same story todayshe came home to find his room in complete disarray. And shed left clear instructions before heading off to work: When you get back from school, tidy up the flat!

She put the kettle on, totally drained, and started tidying anyway. As she dusted, she suddenly noticed something missingthe crystal vase, the one her mates had given her for her birthday years ago. It was the nicest thing she owned, honestly wasnt something shed have ever bought for herself. And now, it was just gone. She froze. Had Jamie nicked it and flogged it?

Her mind went places all sorts of dark thoughts. Just the other day shed seen Jamie with a group of dodgy-looking lads. When she asked who they were, he just muttered something and shot her a look that screamed, None of your business!

She couldnt shake ither gut said those boys were trouble. Oh god, what if theyd bullied him into doing something? Jamie wouldnt be like that on his own or would he? And what if he was smoking, or worse? She rushed down the stairs and out onto the street. It was already dark, just a few people stopping by, everyone in a hurry to get home.

She wandered back in slowly. Its all my fault! All of it! Homes been miserable for him. I shout him awake every morning, and by evening, Im still yelling. Oh, Jamie, what sort of mum did you end up with? She just sat, sobbing for ages, then forced herself to clean the house even more because she couldnt bear to just sit.

While wiping down behind the fridge, her hand caught on an old newspaper. As she pulled it out, she heard glass clinking. Wrapped in the paper were fragments of her broken vase.

He didnt steal it he smashed it Alison realised and the tears came, but this time they were of relief. Jamie hadnt stolen or sold the vase; hed just tried to hide it. Now he was scared to come home. And thats when it hit her: it wasnt just clumsiness or mischief. If shed seen the vase, shed have flown off the handle. She sighed heavily and started making dinner, setting the table just so, with napkins and plates all neat.

Jamie got home close to midnight, pausing quietly in the doorway. Alison rushed over: Jamie, love! Where on earth have you been? Ive been worried sickI bet youre freezing? She warmed his chilly hands in hers, gave him a kiss on the cheek, and said, Go on, wash up. I made your favourite.

He looked completely baffled, but he obeyed, and then went to the kitchen. Alison called, Ive set the table in the lounge. Jamie walked in, took in how clean and cosy everything looked, and sat gingerly, not touching a thing.

Eat, sweetheart, she said softly. He couldnt even remember the last time shed called him that. He sat there, staring down.

What is it, Jamie? she asked gently.

He finally met her eyes and blurted in a shaky voice, I broke the vase.

I know, love, Alison replied gently. Its alright. Everything breaks sooner or later.

Suddenly, Jamie put his head on the table and wept. Alison wrapped her arms round his shoulders and quietly cried with him. Once hed calmed, she told him, Im sorry, Jamie. I yell and nag you all the time. Things are tough for me, darling, and I know its hard for you, too. I see you dont have the things your classmates do, and Im always too exhausted. Im sorry. Ill never take it out on you again.

They finished their dinner quietly and went off to bed. In the morning, for the first time in years, Jamie got up by himself no fuss needed. And as he left for school, instead of her usual Dont you dare Alison kissed his cheek and simply said, See you tonight!

When she got home from work that evening, the floors were spotless, and Jamie had made dinner hed even fried some chips for them both.

After that, Alison swore off ever nagging him about school or grades. If even quick school visits left her this anxious, how much harder must it be for her boy?

When Jamie announced he wanted to stay on through sixth form, Alison didnt let him see her doubts. Once, secretly, she peaked at his report bookthere were no failing marks at all.

But the day she cherished most was one evening, after supper, when she spread out her bills and accounts. Jamie came over, sat beside her, and offered to help add up the numbers. After about an hours work, she suddenly realised hed laid his head on her shoulder.

She froze. Got flooded with memorieswhen he was little, hed snuggle next to her and, tired out, fall asleep on her arm. She just sat there, utterly still, because she knew shed found her son again.
