I’m Not Ready to Get Married: I’m Far Too Responsible a Person to Take Someone Else’s Future into My Hands…

After finishing university, Emily landed a position at a company known for its close-knit team, where everyone was both friendly and supportive. Her arrival somehow made our camaraderie even stronger. She was that sort of girl who made you feel at ease warm, welcoming, and you couldnt help but trust her the moment you spoke to her.

Emily lived just a stones throw from our new office, tucked up in a shiny block of flats. I remember feeling a real connection with her from the outset and when I learned she owned her own one-bedroom flat, it was as though a light switched on for me. At nearly thirty, I had nothing much to show for myself but a long daily train ride to work from the outskirts. Oh, how I used to complain about those commutes! But, truly, most evenings I ended up at someone elses place, seldom bothering to go home at all.

Emily was the kind of woman men dream about. Not a fault could be found with her; she was as lovely inside as she was on the outside. I latched onto her, clinging to her attention for three years. While she was thriving always off on business trips, earning a tidy sum, and growing more accomplished I remained weak, plagued a bit by health issues and really never standing on my own two feet. We visited doctors often, and the prospect of children seemed a distant dream.

No one ever mentioned a wedding. Every now and then, our boss would recall a story about his nephew, who proposed to his girlfriend, only to learn just before their wedding that she had stage-three cancer. They went through with it; he was young, full of life, and cared for her until the end.

Three years on, a thought struck Emily: Hes living in my flat, Im bankrolling everything, and not once has marriage been mentioned. She finally confronted me about it. In response, I bought her a ring and announced our engagement. Yet, after her next trip for work, I sat her down and admitted, Im not ready to get married. Im too responsible to take someone elses future in my hands. Keep the ring as a token of the beautiful love we shared. Emily was never quite herself after that Im sure she never imagined such a parting gift from someone she cared about.

Then our boss sent Emily off on another business trip, this time giving her a theatre ticket and jokingly threatening shed lose her job if she didnt go. At the theatre, she ended up sitting beside our bosss widowed nephew. They started talking and, for the rest of the trip, they hardly left each others side. Emily soon discovered she was expecting, and the two of them were over the moon.

They wasted no time in planning a wedding fitting for a princess Emily flourished. Ten years down the line, they have two sons and are toying with the idea of a third child. Boy or girl, so long as the babys healthy, is all that matters now. Theyre blessed with a warm, strong family life.

As for me, I never quite worked out what I wanted from life. I kept telling myself a family was an expensive luxury, so I never allowed myself to take that leap into real responsibility. After finally paying off the car loan, I treated myself to a new laptop which caused quite a stir for all of a week. Who knows how Ill manage to pay off this new loan?

The lesson I carry with me is this: Lifes richness comes not from possessions or freedom from responsibility, but from the strength to care for others, to commit, and to build something lasting together.
