I Met My Husband for the First Time at His Own Wedding
So, youll never guess what happened to me when I was a few months into my job at this publishing house in London. It all started when one of my colleagues, Alison, invited me to her wedding. We’d hit it off almost instantlyproper friends from the get-go, which was such a relief in a new job. I hadn’t actually met her fiancé before, but I said yes to the invite, if Im honest, partly because I was really looking forward to wearing this lovely new dress Id bought.
Anyway, Alison had also invited a few others from work, so we all went together. Of course, the lot of us were running lateas per usualand when we got there, everyone was already sat down, tucking into their starters. So we just sort of snuck into the reception hall, trying not to draw attention.
I swear, there must have been over a hundred people packed into the place, and the decorations were absolutely stunningloads of flowers, twinkling fairy lights, the works. And the food! There were more options than you could shake a stick at. But all of that faded into the background the moment I spotted Alisons husband-to-be, James. The strangest thing happenedI was immediately smitten. Im not joking, it was love at first sight, and to top it all off, the feeling was definitely mutual. The entire evening, I was walking around like Id been hit over the head with somethingmy cheeks burning, my heart pounding, barely able to pick at my food or even hold a conversation.
By the end of the evening, I just couldnt take it anymore. I made an excuse and left early, telling everyone I had a headache or something. The next evening, as I left the office, who should I see waiting outside for me but James himself? Turns out, Alison was away on holidayshed taken some time off after the weddingso he wasnt at work.
He walked straight up to me, didnt say a word, just took my hand and led me over to his car. Honestly, it was like out of a film! We just started kissing there and then. We talked and kissed for what must have been hours, and eventually ended up back at my flat. Thats when everything changedhe promised me hed leave Alison and be with meand, believe it or not, thats exactly what he did. He went to talk to her, packed his things up, and just moved in with me that night. I never really asked about their conversation; it just felt best not to pry.
Not long after that, we got married ourselves and bought a cosy little place together in Brighton. Its been over three years now and Ive never felt happier. I did leave my job straight awayI can only imagine the gossip flying round the office after all that, especially since Alison had been there for years and I was the newbie. Im sure there were plenty who thought I was the villain of the piece and I daresay I got cursed a bit behind my back!
But honestly, James and I just agreed to draw a line under the past and start fresh. I havent got a clue how Alisons doing nowwe never discussed it and I dont think I ever will. All I know is, they all said our marriage wouldnt last, but here we are, happier than ever, proving everyone wrong day by day.
Going through all that taught me loads, but mainly that you absolutely have to stand up for your own happiness, even if it makes people talk. It was definitely worth it.
