I spent a week planning our anniversary and cooking all the kids’ favorite meals, but nobody visited me—apparently, I’m the bad one for not handing over the house.
Getting ready for a big celebration always seems to be a mad rush, doesnt it? Its stressful but its that good sort of chaos: your loved ones come over, family gathers round, and everyone just lets loose and enjoys themselves. I have to tell you about what happened with this lovely woman whod been dreaming of spending her 60th birthday surrounded by her family.
Shed been planning for her 60th for over a weekshe actually turned 60 just a few days before. She was so excited about having the whole family round, she put her heart into it all. Because of the lockdown, she had to scrap the idea of booking somewhere out, so she decided to hold the bash at home instead.
She lives with her daughter, Abigail, who’s 31 now and still single. Her son, Oliver, is married and has a young daughter. Oliver just hit forty himself, and she was really hoping to have her children and granddaughter together for her big day. She went out and got all the shopping done, came up with the menushe made loads: all sorts of nibbles, three fresh salads, those lovely stuffed cabbage leaves, proper roast meat, and even a beautiful cake. She invited everyone round for Saturday, thinking it would work best for all of them.
But… nobody showed up. Her son wouldnt pick up his phone. She just couldnt get her head around it. She was absolutely gutted. The whole day fell flatshe went from feeling so full of anticipation to sitting alone, staring at a table groaning with food nobody would eat. It was heartbreaking, honestly. She couldnt believe her own children could treat her that way. Abigail tried her best to cheer her up, but she was just too crushed. So the next morning, she took some of the food and set off to her sons house to find out what on earth had happened.
You know, she brought Oliver and Abigail up by herself after her husband went off to work abroad and simply vanished. Thanks to her parents, shed managed to buy a little two-bedroom flat where they all lived. When Oliver turned 30 and got married, they moved him and his wife into one bedroom, Abigail had the second, and she squeezed herself into the living room. It wasnt ideal, but she wanted to help out.
They did that for eight years. She practically raised her granddaughter! Then Olivers mother-in-law passed away. Shed never really spoken to her or helped with the grandkids, but she did leave her a one-bedroom flat in her will. It needed a fair bit of work doing up. When it was sorted, she gave it to Oliver and his family so theyd have their own space. After that, they saw each other less, but always got together on special occasions.
So when they didnt come to her 60th, it really hit her. She got herself over there first thing the next dayworried sick, thinking maybe something awful had happened. She even brought a load of the leftover food. Olivers wife, Victoria, opened the door looking thoroughly annoyed to be woken up early. She wanted to know what she was doing there.
Turns out, Oliver was still fast asleep. When he did finally wake up, he offered her a cup of tea. She asked him, plain and simple, why they hadnt come after being invited well in advance. She also asked why he hadnt picked up when she called. He didnt say a wordVictoria did all the talking. Suddenly, it comes out that shes been holding a grudge this whole time because they only got a one-bedroom place from her, while she got to live in a three-bed. She complained they were so cramped they couldnt consider a second child. Honestly, some gratitude, right? You bend over backwards your entire life, give your family a home, and it turns out its just not enough.
It really makes you think: maybe you need to put yourself first sometimes, before giving everything to others, or you might just end up with nothing but disappointment.
