“If You Want to Place Him in a Children’s Home, I’ll Understand,” My Husband Said
I used to work as a shop assistant. One afternoon, an elderly woman came in, did her shopping, and then looked around the store, quite puzzled. Straightaway, I could tell she wouldnt be able to carry all her bags home by herself.
How far do you live from here? I asked.
Just three streets away, she replied.
In that case, let me give you a hand.
I closed the shop and decided to give up my break to help her out. As we walked, I discovered she was a genuinely lovely person, warm and friendly she was 78 and completely alone. Her son had passed away from cancer when he was still young, and her daughter caught up in a troubled life never remembered her ageing mother. From that day on, we became friends.
I made a habit of visiting her, popping over for tea now and again, chatting about all sorts, helping with the little things about the house, and offering her a bit of company.
Then, one day, I realised it had been a while since Id last seen her, so I headed to her home. I knocked and knocked. Eventually, a womans voice called out: Whos there? It was her neighbour. Are you Mary? Her friend?
Yes, thats me
Shes passed away. She left you a card when they took her to hospital.
I slipped the note into my pocket and left as I couldnt bring myself to read it there and then. When I told my husband what had happened, we decided it would be best to read her letter together.
Mary, youve been my only support. You are the only one I can truly call on for a kindness. I have a granddaughter. My daughter lost custody and the girl has been living in a childrens home. I used to visit her every weekend… If its not too much trouble, would you visit her from time to time? Heres the number; ring them, theres something waiting for you…
I rang the number and booked an appointment. My husband came along. To my surprise, the gentleman we met was a solicitor. In his office, we learned that the old woman had left me her flat in her will.
The next day, we went to see her granddaughter together. The little red-haired ten-year-old was so sweet-natured that we both wanted to adopt her. Our children were delighted as well.
Three years passed. My husband and I had a serious falling out and he went to stay with his mum for a spell, though after a while, we made up.
The girl grew older, not in any rush to move into her grandmothers flat, so we let it out to bring in a bit of extra income. Our own children werent in any hurry to leave home either.
One evening, my husband had a late shift. When I heard the door, I rushed to greet him. But he wasnt alone he was holding the hand of a young boy.
I can explain, he said.
Lets make some supper, settle everyone in for the night, and then talk.
Remember when I stayed at Mums? he asked.
Yes.
Well, I need you to know it was a mistake. Ive only ever truly loved you. Id had too much to drink, and well Two days later, it was all behind me. I honestly forgot about it. But today, I was contacted by social services. It turns out that woman had a son all those years ago, but never said a word to me. Shes been drinking, neglected the boy, theyve had to take away her rights as a mother, and thats how they tracked me down. If I say no, hell have to go into care. But if you want, we can let him go to a childrens home. Ill understand.
Of course, I couldnt let that happen. He was the spitting image of my husband. I found it in my heart to forgive, and I accepted the child as my own. And thats how our life together goes on.
