Infidelity: Not a Reason to End the Marriage
What? Emily almost dropped her cup. An affair isnt a reason for divorce? You are you out of your mind?
Quite the opposite, Sophie replied evenly, as if she were discussing the weather, not her own marriage.
He cheated on you!
Oh, come off it, she gave a weary smile and stirred her coffee. We both betrayed each other long before that.
Emily frowned, leaned in closer.
Youre saying that now just to look strong?
No, Sophie lifted her eyes. There was no anger or tears, only fatigue. Im simply tired of pretending we ever had a proper family.
A brief silence stretched.
Wait, Emily whispered. So you think an affair is just a trifle?
Not at all, Sophie waved a hand. Its not the point. The point is what came before, and what followed.
She pushed the cup aside, as if clearing a barrier between them.
Shall I tell you? Promise not to interrupt.
Go on, Emily shifted her chair nearer. Im listening
Sophie sighed.
You see, she began, we were a typical British couple. Met, married, had the kids, a mortgage, endless renovations the whole ratrace of daily life.
One day I realised we were still living under the same roof, but not together.
She gave a short, hollow laugh.
David was never satisfied. You know the type they do nothing outright wrong, yet they make everything feel cold. Even when theyre silent you feel youre at fault, you feel unworthy
Emily nodded; it was all too familiar.
He started staying late at work, sometimes until dawn, Sophies gaze drifted to the window. I asked nothing. Im an adult, after all. If a man wants to hide something, hell hide it. If he wants to leave, hell leave. If he doesnt, hes probably content.
It was him, not me. I was alone, feeling superfluous and longoverdue for a change.
A shiver ran through her, as if a memory had pricked her from the inside.
And then she paused a heartbeat. Then came that trip. You remember?
I do. You said you were suffocating in your flat, the oppressive quiet, the endless nagging you needed a jolt.
Exactly! I booked a flight
The sea, the surf, the sun. It felt like landing on another planet.
And suddenly I found myself smiling for no reason. Just because there was a man who listened, who didnt push, who didnt judge. He was ordinary, unremarkable, no romance, just warm. That was enough.
Emily frowned.
But you knew it was well
Of course I knew, Sophie said without embarrassment, but in that moment, for the first time in years, I felt alive. Desired. Understand? And the worst part? It wasnt the affair. It was that nobody at home even noticed Id come back a different person.
She tapped the table, keeping a rhythm.
Then David stumbled upon our messages. By stumbling you mean? she smiled crookedly. He always managed to find exactly what he wanted.
And?
Screams. Accusations. Suitcases. Leaving. Returning. More screams. More accusations. And the most disgusting line Ill never forget.
She mimicked a dry, male voice: Im a man. I can do what I like. And you I cant even look at you and Ill never forgive you.
Emily exhaled softly.
Thats vile.
Right, Sophie shrugged, Im no angel either. Bottom line: we wore each other out so badly we had no energy left to live together. So an affair isnt the cause, Emily. Its a symptom. The last drop.
And then? Emily asked after a pause.
After a while, when we realised we couldnt even share a roof formally, he said hed file for divorce.
Were you scared?
Not a bit. I felt nothing. I looked at him and thought: this is just the end of a chapter. Logical, inevitable.
The kids, by the way, took it with surprising composure. No tantrums, no drama.
So you let him go? Just like that?
Absolutely, Sophie said calmly, smiling. Whats the point of holding onto someone whos already left? He didnt just walk out of the house, Emily. He walked out of our lives.
Emily stayed silent.
Sophie continued.
And you know the oddest thing? After he left, the house felt light. Quiet. As if someone had lifted a tenstone backpack Id been dragging for a decade, she laughed. Thats why I say an affair isnt a reason for divorce.
Then what is? Emily asked.
Sophie met her gaze.
When you live with someone and feel utterly alone. For years. When you dont exist in his world. When home with him is worse than being on your own. Thats the real reason.
She leaned back in her chair.
An affair is just a punctuation mark someone else places where youre not looking.
Emily lunged forward.
Sophie! Are you serious?! she slapped the table, I completely disagree! I know plenty of people whove been through this. Some divorce after an affair, others forgive but none of them ever justify betrayal! Its foolish, painful, degrading. How can you say that?
Sophie met the outburst with calm.
Emily, Im not defending anyone. I just stopped lying to myself. And I maintain: an affair isnt a stab in the back. Its the final rung on a ladder couples climb together day after day, hour after hour. Together. Got it?
Emily froze, and Sophie added softly:
And you know the one who cheats is often the one who first stopped hoping. The one who kept pulling, kept saving, until he finally broke.
So the traitor isnt always the one who walks out. Sometimes its the one whos been there all along but abandoned you long ago. Tell that to your friends. Perhaps then theyll finally see what really happened to them.
