Jessica’s Husband Frequently Raised His Hand Against Her, and After the Birth of Their Daughter, the Situation Only Grew Worse
June 14
Emily grew up in a small village up north, a place where you could still buy a modest one-bedroom flat for a handful of pounds. Thats what she did in the end, though her husband Henry was none the wiser. While Henry was off travelling for business, our baby girl was born. I told him wed gone to a private clinic in London, but in truth, it was just the regular hospital down the road.
The money Henry sent for shopping, Emily tucked away with careful thrift. The days Henry was home, the fridge groaned with steaks, salmon, and all manner of treats, but once he was away, our penny-pinching carried on. I never bought anything new for my daughtershe wore second-hand clothes from kind neighbours or bargains Id found online. That was how Emily managed to scrape together enough for a flat. Mum often popped round to mind the little one whilst I slipped off quietly to work in the mornings. Henry, deep down, only had himself to blame. Emily was utterly dutiful, never questioning his demands. Coming from the country whilst he was a city man, he’d gotten used to giving orders, expecting all to be done his way.
One morning, she woke up knowing she had to escapeit was only a matter of time until his temper became something truly dangerous. Emily even fudged the household receipts, telling Henry shed bought a kilo of apples when in truth it was only half thatevery penny counted.
It took her over two years of scrimping before she finally had enough to break free. The day before Henry was due back from another work trip, she packed her things and our daughter, and we left. The divorce papers were handed in hours before we slipped quietly out of the city.
Henry tried everything to get us backcalling, promising the moon, then threatening when that didnt work. He swore hed never give up. Not long after, I heard hed found himself a university student. Im certain hell treat her just the same as he did me.
I never once lied to Henry in the way that truly matters. That money I saved was all hard-earnedI went hungry to make sure wed have a future. I had nowhere else to turn. In the end, it was the only way to protect myself and, more importantly, my precious daughter.
If theres one thing Ive learnt, its that sometimes survival means making choices no one will ever understandexcept those whove lived them.
