My Wedding Day Arrived, But My Parents Didn’t Attend – They Haven’t Needed Me Since I Was a Child

Published

During my childhood, my brother, sister, and I were close in age, and I often wore clothes handed down from my sister. While she was the focus of special attention and had resources devoted to her, I felt neglected and overlooked. My parents put their money towards her education, while I was left to fend for myself. Even when I succeeded academically, there was no sign of pride or happiness from them regarding my accomplishments.

My low self-esteem grew because of this, stopping me from standing up for myself or seeking fairness. Despite it all, I worked hard and managed to get accepted into one of the top universities in the country, but my parents showed no sense of recognition. Instead, they simply told me to find a job if I couldnt secure a scholarship. Disheartened by their apathy, I moved into university halls, where I met the man who would become my husband. While studying, I found out I was expecting a baby, and together we decided to marry.

My parents were absolutely against the idea, going so far as to urge me to end the pregnancy. They shouted at me, called me names, and refused to give any financial or emotional support. Meanwhile, my sister was given a brand-new, expensive car. Despite the lack of encouragement from my own family, I went on to give birth to a son, and my husbands family gifted us a flat to live in. My parents reaction was minimal and insincere; they hardly took an interest in my life.

Years passed, my son grew older, and I welcomed another child. Life kept improving thanks to the constant love and support from my husband and his family. Out of the blue, my mother got in touch, telling me about my sisters upcoming wedding and asking me to take out a loan to pay for it. I refused, and she disowned me, declaring I no longer had a family.

That day, I decided it was time to stand tall and put everything and everyone in their rightful place. I had endured enough neglect and unfairness. I realised Id built a caring home with my husband and childrena true family founded on love and support, not just mere blood relations. Sometimes, family isnt about who youre born to, but about who stands by you and cherishes you along the way.
