John came home and walked into the kitchen. Dinner was waiting for him on the table. Thats odd. Wheres Emily? he wondered. He wandered into the bedroom, where his wife was sitting on the floor, packing her things into a bag.

Are you going somewhere? John asked.

Ive been referred to the county hospital for a check-up. There are some worrying signs, Emily suddenly replied.

What do you mean, worrying? John was taken aback. Is it the same thing your mother passed from? He stared at his wife, unable to take in what was happening.

For days, John couldnt find any peace. He was terribly worried about his wife, Emily, who was undergoing tests in the city. John remained at home in their quiet village, waiting anxiously and hopefully for news.

Emily had never been one to complain, and John had grown to believe she was perfectly healthy. They had been married for thirty years and raised two children. Emily was the foundation of the householdshe kept everything running smoothly, managed the cooking, cleaning, and other chores. John saw this as the norm; housework simply wasnt a mans job in his eyes.

Yet, Emily wasnt a housewife. She worked as an accountant at the same company as John. When they both returned from work, Johns routine was to groan about how exhausting his day was, lie down on the sofa, and put the television on.

Meanwhile, Emily would hurry to the kitchen to prepare dinner and the next days lunch, tidy up, wash up, iron clothes the endless pattern of jobs that never quite finished. Their house was always immaculate and inviting, with fresh, delicious food on the table every evening. John disliked eating the same thing two days in a row, so Emily spent countless hours in the kitchen. She never asked for help, and it never occurred to John to offer. Why would he? That wasnt for men.

When Emily took the day off for the examination, John was genuinely surprised.

Whats wrong? he asked. Are you feeling unwell?

I hope not, Emily replied. I just havent felt right lately.

Maybe you need some vitamins, John suggested. It is spring, after all.

Perhaps, Emily said, shrugging.

That evening, when John got home, Emily told him she needed to go to the city hospital for tests.

What for? Why? John questioned.

They think something might be seriously wrong. Thats why Ive been referred to the county hospital, Emily said.

What do you mean, something serious? John pressed. Is it what your mum had?

Its just a suspicion, nothing certain, Emily replied, trying to reassure him though shed already wept alone while he was at work. Ive bought a coach ticket, Im leaving tomorrow morning at eight. There are cutlets and rice on, and salad on the table. Help yourself, Ive got packing to finish and want an early night.

Have you eaten? he asked.

Im not hungry, she replied quietly, carrying on with her packing.

John gazed at her, thrilled by the memory of how full of life shed always beennever complaining, always bustling about. Now, maybe, she faced something life-changing.

I think Ive packed everything Ill need, Emily said at last.

Dont forget your phone charger, John reminded.

Yes, thanksgood idea, John. Arent you going to have your dinner?

Im not really hungry, either

Have I upset you?

He nodded silently.

He looked at her travel bag and remembered how, four years ago, shed bought it for their planned seaside holiday. Shed been so excited! They hadnt taken a trip in agesalways spending summers doing up their cottage.

Emily had bought new swimsuits, a lovely dress, and a straw hat. But in the end, their trip never happened. Johns boss had asked him to fill in for a sick colleague, promising a nice bonus. John agreed, thinking it would be foolish to pass up the opportunitybesides, they wanted to redecorate their bedroom. The bonus would come in handy.

At the time, John thought Emily was pleased with his decision. Even so, hed heard her quietly crying at night. Shed put it down to a bad dream, but only now did John realise shed been hurt because their seaside holidayher dreamwas snatched away. The next year, another thing came up, and Emily stopped mentioning the seaside altogether, which rather suited John. He preferred not going anywhere: the cottage was enough for hima place to barbecue, invite friends, and escape to the nearby river for a swim. Why pay for holidays away, when you could relax just as well at home?

Now, Emily was packing that same bag, not for a holiday but for a hospital visit. What if it was serious? John was filled with dread. He skipped dinner and lay restless all night, hearing Emilys quiet sobs beside him. He longed to comfort her but couldnt summon the courage.

In the morning, John walked Emily to the coach station. They shared a long hug before she boarded. He stood in silence as the coach pulled away, tears welling in his eyes.

Emily he whispered, barely audible. My love, may everything be alright

He felt hollow, but managed to pull himself together long enough to get through work. Immersed in his tasks, he could almost distract himself from his fears, but as soon as he returned to the empty house, the loneliness crept back. He forced himself to heat up yesterdays dinner and eat a little.

In search of comfort, John leafed through their photo album. Here they were as newlywedshow lovely and slender Emily once looked! Of course, she was beautiful now, but back then John still remembered the first time he saw her.

Theyd met at his friends birthday party. Emily was there with another man; John had brought his own girlfriend. But when he saw Emily, he was smitten at first sight. Had anyone ever suggested hed believe in love at first sight, hed have laughed. Yet, it had happened.

Hed argued with his girlfriend Katherine that night. She could tell he only had eyes for Emily. Taking him outside, she made a scene.

Fine, said John, We should have split up ages ago. I never loved you anyway. Katherine left in tears, but within a week she was dating Victor, who had pined for her since school, and later married him.

Winning Emily wasnt simple. Even after her breakup, Emily was in no rush to fall into Johns arms. Yet, in time, she responded to his persistence

As John turned the albums pages, he relived the happiest moments of their life together. He realised just how lucky hed been all these yearsand how little hed valued it. When had he last told Emily he loved her? Or paid her a compliment? He couldnt remember. Hed never even thanked her for dinner, assuming it was simply her duty as his wife.

Only now did John realise how much Emily had carried on her slender shouldersthe whole household, every chore. Hed just assumed she was strong, that she never got tired If he was ill, Emily fussed over him, made him lemon tea or chicken broth, listened to his complaints, took care of him. If she was unwell, shed pop some medicine and head to work without a fuss.

The thought that he might lose Emily frightened John to his core. Throughout the days she was away at the hospital, he moved through life on autopilot. They spoke by phone every day, but Emily had no firm news. John couldnt settle, reproaching himself for having been such a neglectful, selfish husband. If only he could put things right

One evening, Emily finally rang. John, Ive got good news! It hasnt been confirmed. I do have health issues, but nothing nearly as serious, she said.

Really? John cried, his voice full of relief. Emily, I cant tell you how happy I am

A few days later, John was waiting at the coach station with a bouquet of her favourite white lilies.

Oh, John, you didnt need to spend on flowers! Emily smiled. But thank youtheyre lovely.

I missed you so much, John said, pulling her close. I love you so much forgive me

Forgive you? For what? Emily was puzzled.

I havent been the best husband all these years

What makes you say that? Did youdid you cheat on me?

Never! John blurted out. But I didnt care for you enough, hardly helped. Thats going to change. Theres something else, tooIve got a surprise.

What kind of surprise?

I bought us ticketsnext month, were taking a holiday at the seaside.

The seaside? What about the cottage?

Oh, forget it, John said with a wave of his hand. “Perhaps we should sell it altogether. We can buy veg at the market!

I hardly recognise you! Emily laughed.

I hardly recognise myself, said John seriously. I was so frightened of losing you From now on, Ill cherish you like the most precious treasure. I love you so much…

Oh, John! Emily smiled through tears. I suppose all this had to happen for me to hear those words from you. Well, come on, lets go home I love you, too.

Sometimes, it takes a scare to see the true value of the people we love. Dont wait until its almost too lateshow your loved ones they matter every day.
