My Husband Left Suddenly – That’s How I Discovered All Our Assets Had Been Transferred to the Young Lady

They say that if you marry a very intelligent man, he will never betray youhe will always be loyal and will know the meaning of love and care. Thats what my mum and my gran used to tell me, almost like a family mantra. Perhaps thats why, when I hit my thirties, I didnt even consider courting men with questionable intentionswhat would be the point? I wanted something solid, someone honourable. And so, as fate would have it, I met Henry through some mutual friends. Henry was Cambridge-educated, clever as could be, focused, and driven.

I myself had a degree in English Literature, so we both valued education, though our interests differed. Still, we always found something to talk about. Gradually, we began spending more time together. Our connection grew deeper, and I soon realised just how happy I was with him. A year later, when Henry asked me to marry him, there was only one answer I could give. We set up home in a small flat that Gran had left me in Norwich. The one-bedroom wasnt grand, but it suited us well enough as a young couple. Then I fell pregnant: first, a son, and a year later, a daughter.

Space was tight, and our finances even tighter. Thats when Henry tried his hand at running his own business. I stayed at home, raising our children and supporting him in every way that I could. There were hard periodstimes when wed spent every last penny and wondered what tomorrow would bring. Still, we kept going, believing that one day things would be easier. And, after years of effort, his business finally took off. Our lives improved, and the kids attended some of the best schools in the county. I found myself able to pursue my own hobbies, something Id always longed for.

Henry had his own pursuits as well: hed often go away on walking trips with his friends, and that never bothered me. He was always there for the family, shouldering every responsibility, so who was I to begrudge him his time? Our relationship remained close, filled with respect and affection. Honestly, everything seemed as it should be. It never even occurred to me that it might unravel in an instant.

One particular weekend, Henry fell ill quite suddenly; we called for an ambulance, but a few hours later, he was gone. Just like that. As if hed never been there at all. The children and I were left reeling, not just from the pain of grief but from a devastating truth that surfaced shortly after. For five years, Henry had been carrying on with a woman young enough to be his own daughter. It turned out his trips away had little to do with walking. When he died, everythinghis business, the house, the holiday cottage, even his carpassed to her. We had nothing left, nothing at all. The shock was unimaginable. How could he have done this? To think, all that time, he walked this earth knowing his own family would be left without a roof over their heads.

I still dont quite know how to move forward. But Ive learned, painfully, that intellect and education dont always promise decency or loyalty. The truth is, you can never be entirely certain whats in another persons heart, no matter how much you think you know them.
