The Journey to Happiness: A New Beginning for Two Lovers

Emily was travelling to meet the man she loved, practically floating on wings of joy. At last, her son had finished school and been accepted into university. Now, she and her husband could finally live together after years of waiting.

The very day she sent her son off to study, she bought a bus ticket and set off for John. Their marriage had only lasted two years, but they felt as if they had known each other forever.

Their relationship had never been easy. It had started rough, weathered many storms, but fate had promised them a future togetheror so Emily was certain.

They had met eight years earlier. Back then, she had just healed from her divorce with her first husband and kept everyone at arms lengthuntil she met John. Even with him, she had been hesitant at first. He had to work hard to convince her he wasnt like her ex, William.

After six months of dating, they decided to move in together. John came to live with her since his tiny flat couldnt fit their whole familyEmily had a ten-year-old son. He was well-behaved but struggled to connect with his stepfather at first.

Three years into their life together, John began talking about marriage, but Emily wasnt thrilled. To her, paperwork meant little. It didnt guard against betrayal, whether you were a man or a woman. She was happy as things were and didnt want change.

At first, John accepted her view, but soon realised it wasnt enough for him. He wanted Emily as his wife in every sense. Eventually, he gave her an ultimatum: marry or part ways.

Emily disliked his persistence and decided it was better to separate. For half a year, they went their own ways.

During that time, John moved to another town where a friend offered him a well-paid job. He rarely returned home, visiting his parents only once every two months. On one such trip, he ran into Emily again.

She was walking in the park, seemingly carefree and happyuntil her eyes met his. In her gaze, he saw exactly what he felt in his own heart. She still loved him. And she couldnt hide it.

They rekindled their relationship, this time long-distance. Sometimes she visited him, other times he came to her. Every meeting was carefully planned, yet each was filled with warmth and passion.

They usually saw each other once a month, sometimes twice. John often asked her to move in with himhe had bought a two-bedroom flat in his new town, though he was still paying off the mortgage.

Emily would have loved nothing more, but she couldnt uproot her life so suddenly. Her son was a teenager who needed her, and her mother was ill, requiring care. For over two years, Emily had worked tirelessly to nurse her back to health, and at last, her mother had improved.

“Youll live a long time yet!” the doctor had cheerfully said upon discharging her.

Margaret Davies no longer needed constant care, but Alex was starting his GCSEs. He didnt want to change schools and begged his mother to wait until he finished. She had to compromise.

The summer before Alex began sixth form, Emily and John finally married. Seeing the joy it brought him, she regretted not agreeing soonerbut what use was dwelling on the past?

Now, they did more than just meet. Their relationship could have been called a weekend marriage, if not for the hundreds of miles between them.

And now, Alex had been accepted into university. Emily was proud of her son and realised she could finally arrange her personal life. She hadnt told John she was moving inshe wanted to surprise him.

He suspected it might happen but didnt know the exact date.

Emily packed her suitcase, boarded the bus, and set off to him. She wanted this day to be etched in his memory forever. She imagined herself in lace lingerie, scattering rose petals on freshly changed sheets, preparing a delicious dinner, waiting for her beloved to return from work.

She daydreamed about these details on the bus ride. She was sure John would be thrilledbut instead, the surprise was waiting for her.

She unlocked his flat door with her key and froze in shock. A pair of bright blue eyes stared backa stunning young woman with fiery red hair.

“Who are you?” Emily demanded.

“Im Ruby. Oh you must be Emily. Sorry, Ill leave right away!”

“Leave? Who *are* you?” Emily snapped.

“Please, dont be angry. Im your husbands girlfriend!”

“What? His *girlfriend*?”

Emily closed the door quietly, leaving behind all she had believed was hers, determined to forge a new path alone.

Sometimes, the greatest love stories teach us that letting go is the bravest act of all.
