The Grandchildren Are Safe Behind the Fence and Need to Be Looked After – We’ll Be Back Soon

What do I honestly think about early morning phone calls? Incredibly early ones, at that.

Recently, my husbands sister-in-law has developed the habit of ringing me at five in the morning. And she wasnt the only onemy husbands mobile, which is never on silent at that hour, began ringing too. His own sister was calling. Wed barely opened our eyes. Their nerve was quite extraordinary.

Upon answering, I heard:

Why are you still asleep? We need to leave before eleven for urgent business. Keep an eye on the kids. Were out by your front gate.

Before we could get a word in, she hung up.

My husband and I simply stared at each other in disbelief. Nieces and nephews at this hour, standing outside our gate?

He quickly got dressed and went outside. The dogs were barking their heads offa sure sign someone was actually out there.

And yes, there they were: three of our nieces and nephews lined up neatly at the garden gate. I was genuinely taken aback.

We ushered the children inside and immediately started ringing their parents to find out what on earth was happening. The response we received was:

Dont you love your nieces and nephews at all? You never help them with money, never buy them gifts. The least you could do is spend time with them. Now, we absolutely must leave on important business. You have a chance to redeem yourselves in the eyes of the family.

My husband and I were left stunned. The youngest child wasnt even a year old yet, and they hadnt bothered to bring nappies or any baby food.

Thankfully, theres a Tesco in our town thats open round the clock. My husband dashed out to buy whatever the children needed. After all, they had to eat.

We certainly had a trying time with them. The children misbehaved, refused to nap, and burst into tears at the drop of a hat. I couldnt blame thembeing woken up so early is bound to put anyone out of sorts.

Their parents didnt collect them until three in the afternoon, and only then because wed been calling constantly. Looking after someone elses childrenwhat an enormous responsibility.

To make matters worse, they criticised us for buying the wrong nappies and baby food. Still, they took the shopping home with them.

Now, were left wondering how to protect ourselves from something like this happening again. Im frightened by the thought that well wake up to find our nieces and nephews outside our front gate at five in the morning once more. Im still shaken by the whole ordeal.
