My Brother Often Asked Me for Money While Lounging on the Sofa, But One Time When I Refused, My Mum’s Reaction Took Me Completely by Surprise
I never imagined my own family would be the reason I’d feel compelled to leave home. They seemed to believe it was my duty to financially support every member who needed help. From a young age, Id always been clear about wanting to become a software developer; it was something I absolutely loved. Following my passion, I finished college, left my hometown for university in Manchester, and made real strides in my chosen career. My hard work paid off, and I landed a well-paid programming job without any difficulty.
I was content, with no desire to rush into marriage, valuing my independence and enjoying my own way of life. Even though I worked full-time, I always supported my mum financially, and every year I made a point of taking her on holiday. I truly appreciated everything shed done for me.
But everything changed when my younger brother started asking for money more and more often, complaining that he couldnt find work. At first, I didnt mind lending a hand, but it soon became clear he was taking advantage of me. This worried me, so I decided it was time to be honest with him. I told him straight that he needed to get his act together, find a job, and earn his own keep instead of relying on others.
It wasnt out of stinginess that I said no; I just wanted my brother to take responsibility for his own life and future. To my surprise, after I turned him down, our mum rang me, furious, and we ended up arguing. She accused me of being selfish and forgetting my family. To make matters worse, some relatives stopped speaking to me because of all this. The constant sense of guilt and shame became too much, and in the end, I made the difficult decision to move to another country.
I dont regret the choicemy life is thriving, and I earn a good wagebut there is now a distance between me and my family. Even so, I still make a point of calling my mum regularly and helping her whenever she needs it.
